Album Review

On Little Daggers, Val Emmich carefully crafts a disingenuous album that's light and frothy, a poppy confection that sugarcoats the hard nut themes within. The entire album revolves around life and love, and never more cutting than on "Got a Habit Now" which is not about addiction, but the need for alcohol to lubricate the truth and ease out emotions one would prefer not to lay bare. That song is one of the most dow-tempo and introspective on the set, but even it has a bounce to its beat and a hook to its melody. "The Lucky Ones" and "Get on with It," in contrast, are irrepressibly chirpy, all thumping rhythm and singalong choruses. Thematically, though, the two songs are polar opposites, the former sitting in its cynicism waiting for fortune to change, the latter exuberantly diving straight into everything life has to offer. The rest of the set falls between these musical opposites, as Emmich dips down into indie folk, breezes into Americana — the jaunty harmonica on "We Still Bleed" is a perfect touch — and in a blur of acoustic guitars takes a stab at folk-punk on "Down." That almost moody latter track pushes towards the grandiose, but still sports a simplicity of sound that is the fulcrum of the set. But that too hides a secret, an arrangement much more complex than it initially seems, and for all its minimalistic feel, there's more going on than originally meets the ear. Which is the beauty of this set; perfect pop for discerning people, and lyrics honed with emotional truth.

The Luck Ones: I crashed my car to this song because it’s such a happy, roll down the windows, drive through the country kind of song. It’s a good peppy song with great lyrics and an excellent hook. Whenever I hear this song I can’t help but sing along. Get on With it: Your voice sounds a little Bowie-esque in this one, I LOVE IT! The chorus kind of reminds me of Rod Stewart and I love Rod. I think you’ve really got the songwriting gift. I also heard this in Big Lots and I stopped and was like I know this song…..how??? And that was even BEFORE I bought the album. This is a great song that really sticks with the listener. Got a Habit now: A good ol fashioned crooner. This is an excellent song because you can just sit there, lay there, stand there, and just completely relax to this song. It reminds you of all the happy yellow smiling memories you had and just removes all stress that could be hiding in your life. Hurt More Later: This is one of my favorites. I love the guitar part and the crescendos of your voice really make the song. The piano really adds to the song. This is a great song with a great message that I think a lot of people need to hear. Darling Denise: I absolutely adore the instrumentation on this song! This is such a beautiful song and you really feel for the characters at the end. It’s got this great waltz rhythm that just makes you want to grab someone and dance. Too Far: I love this song. The lyrics really remind me of my life and I think a lot of people can relate to it. The jump in timing in the voice during the chorus is really ear drawing. I think this song is gonna be on a lot of mix cds and nostalgic slideshows Wake Up Brand New: The beginning of this song really makes you think this song is gonna be way different from the rest of the album. It’s a very foot tapping, drive fast, song. It’s a live in the moment song, and the world never has enough of those. Its fast and heavy, but still light enough that it fits cohesively into the album. We Still Bleed: A nice 60’s rock drum beat that will have any middle aged person turning up the volume. The little riffs in this song really add to the musical palate. I love this song. It’s such a good song. Down: Kind of an irish feel that will keep people coming back for more. The echo effect really add’s to the song. The sound is really heart wrenching and beautiful. You just want to be wherever this was recorded and just lay there. It sounds like a cool abandoned tunnel near the ocean where life stands still and you have enough time to relax. Catalyst: This is my favorite song on the album. I love the Cat Stevens reference, I grew up on his music. This song is achingly beautiful and makes me want to cry and dance at the same time. I just want to lie on the couch on a rainy night and listen to this song forever. Little Daggers Overall: This is not the album to be played when you need to be pumped up, but every other time this record is perfect. It’s got beautiful songs with exquisite lyrics. It’s the perfect cd to drive at night to. Just don’t get lost in the music and crash into something.

Little Daggers!

In my opinion Val's strongest release to date. If you've heard of him on Ugly Betty and are curious about his music, believe me that it's worth every cent.

Just try to resist it

This is one of those albums that goes by so quickly that you wish it would never end. It flows smoothly from one song to another without any misfires. "The Lucky Ones," "Get On With It," "We Still Bleed," and "Catalyst" are a couple of the highlights, regardless though, the whole, entire album is well worth buying.
