Album Review
Hundred Hands is led by members of the Appleseed Cast, Aaron Pillar and Chris Crisci. Along with drummer Ed Rose (who is known for his production work on numerous bands), they form a threesome most obviously influenced by the Appleseed Cast, yet differences abound. Pillar tackles the vocals on Hundred Hands, and the sound is much more typical of what one would expect from earlier Appleseed Cast and not their latest spacey, jazz-influenced material. Production wise, Ed Rose can do no wrong. He helps to bring out Pillar's velvety soft vocals and the textured guitars and steady beats. While everything sounds good on Little Eyes, what's actually there is rather average. "Spider Eyes" and "Farewell" are the winners on this six song EP, but all in all this project could and should be stronger considering the members involved.
Customer Reviews
And The Critics Say...
"There are amazing moments in time when a band like Hundred Hands slips out of the gate with an album that is so sublime, its beauty so stark and naked, that you have to pause for a moment from finding divinity in the bottom of your drink to ponder its elegance. Little Eyes is steeped with a dreamy mid-tempo intoxication that won't be dismissed, and the record does more with its six songs than many bands do over six albums. Its sparse instrumentation and cathedral hall recording production gives the listener a dreamy intimacy, a quality that alone can conjure an emotional hiccup. And like many of the other songs inside the Deep Elm jukebox, its grooves feel like the worn, familiar grooves of the bar you're seated in front of. And so you slip another dollar in the jukebox and order another drink; alone but content, quietly pondering Little Eyes' beauty." - Ear Pollution "Hundred Hands are well versed in the mood-inducing sweet simplicity of pop; there is subtle beauty in crisp, haunting guitars, and emotional grace in a voice that sings as opposed to recitation. Little Eyes is a record of a most lovely nature...restrained yet emotionally provocative, the six songs are bound to appease fans of the Deep Elm ranks who will be more than delighted at the bountiful beauty Hundred Hands have given us. Slow and steady is the name of the game here; drums that pound with intensity with each soft chord; vocals that ease hauntingly into the mix; and absolutely gorgeous guitar plucks that reverberate with each note. This is a beautiful affair. Blissful without arrogance and divine in its beauty, Little Eyes is an example of a project I would be delighted to hear more from. Really nice offering from a label that knows...well worth your time." - PunkRocks "There are few people in the world who can construct lush soundscapes quite like Aaron Pillar and Christopher Crisci of The Appleseed Cast, and here we find Pillar fronting Hundred Hands, conjuring up six more tracks of shimmering melodies on Little Eyes for the more plaintive among us to sigh and weep to. This is top quality stuff, and the production is rich and full, with their twinkling finger-picked guitars and gently swaying arrangements captured beautifully." - Kerrang "Little Eyes is a beautiful record brought to you by Hundred Hands, featuring Aaron Pillar and Christopher Crisci of the Appleseed Cast. It's one of those albums that leaves you craving much more, and Pillar proves his vocal worth with mellow, intertwining melodies. Even with its subtleties, Hundred Hands initiates dynamics very nicely..." - Music Emissions "Hundred Hands seems to be Aaron Pillar's emotional vent. On Little Eyes he expels bad experiences in relationships and other aspects of life, putting it all in somewhat cryptic, poetic prose. His vocals are smooth and confident here, proving he deserves the chance to take center stage. There's much more of a moody, introspective feel on this record, and Hundred Hands sings about real life and more easily understood concepts, doing it with a kind of plodding drumming and moody, melodic guitar. The songs are well structured and better performed. Pillar is an impressive songwriters and singer, and this style of melodic emo-rock never grows old." - Delusions Of Adequacy "On Hundred Hands debut, Little Eyes, the songs are succinct, maybe a little poppy and with an added spaciness...and it all sounds rather good. One of those records with an understated power and persuasive melody. A great mix of post-rock and swirling effects. I think when the clock strikes 2:00AM tonight, I'll pop this little collection of six songs on repeat, just to relax me and energize me at the same time." - Fracture "Hundred Hands' blend of post-hardcore and indie rock makes Little Eyes a record that is completely enjoyable from start to finish, standing strong through multiple listens. Sad without being dark, putting on Little Eyes is like lying in bed on a rainy day with a box full of letters from a friend you've long since lost touch with. There's no anger or resentment...just the droning pain of regret set against a backdrop of the fun times you had. Such a particular emotional place is difficult to find, but Hundred Hands have a way of hitting it consistently, giving them a very unique sound in a scene where everyone is either whiny or angry. Perhaps that's why Little Eyes is so charming; Hundred Hands don't make music to drag you down...they just want to take you on a musical journey, albeit one that deals with some painful topics. Still, once you make it through, the optimistic feeling is so intense that you'll want to listen to the entire thing over again just to undergo the same process." - Deep Fry Bonanza
