Soulful
Powerful, sexy music. Never heard of her before reading about her. GORGEOUS voice, hard to describe, just.. powerful. Cool, spare downtempo sounds and I like the songs too. A great discovery
An electronically perturbed jazz singer
I loved Marilyn as the lead singer of Mudville, but I prefer these songs - simpler, a much better frame for her howling horn of a voice. She still delivers that great, wrenching prose about sex, longing and denial - its stick-to-your-ribs filling. But the voice gives me shivers.
eclectic down-tempo music to chill to
As a fan of Mudville, I've been waiting for this album for a while now. Marilyn Carino certainly nailed it with this solo debut album. I'm a fan of old school trip hop, a genre which was never able to truly define itself as one type of music. Little Genius is definitely trip hop, but so much more. It is an album of eclectic, yet still singularly coherent, songs. Down-tempo beats, a beautiful and haunting voice, intelligent lyrics: a great combination that provides an excellent atomosphere to just chill and relax. Little Genius would fit right into a playlist designed for an casual, low key party. Excellent driving music. Wonderful to have on in the house to groove to while doing chores. And yet, it would not be out of place in a bit more rambunctious setting. :)
Highly recommended for fans of trip hop and electronica.
