The Finest Broadway Show of the 1970s
After working in the theatre for many years on Broadway as a Singing actor, I can still say that this score is exemplary Sondheim. I felt that way when I first heard it at 13 years old and then when I saw the show (luckily living quite close to NY). Victoria Malloy's rendition of 'Soon' and the song itself, must be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. If you listen to the changes in chord structure that I am quite sure has never been written before...it is obvious that Sondheim is the most prolific Broadway Composer of the 20thC. Liaisons will never be performed again as it was by the great Ms. GinGold but...she manages to give you a feeling for the performance on this recording......Glynis Johns....the perfect Sondheim leading lady...she sings as an actor....she does not act as she sings. This is the only rendition of 'Send in the Clowns' that can truly break your heart.
Sondheim at his best
I saw this show on its tryout in Boston and fell in love with it. It had a few different songs in it before coming into New York, but the show was in great shape even then. All the actors were perfectly cast (D. Jamin-Barlett replaced the actress playing Petra, Barlett considered a stronger singer) and the music is ravishing. Here's one show ripe for revival.

One of sondeim's best. The orchestrations are beautiful and how can anyone top Glynis Johns rendition of "send in the clowns"?
