iTunes Review

Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson had become rock royalty by the time Little Queen appeared in 1977. After experiencing some initial highs (a huge-selling debut) and lows (a nasty contractual fight with their first record label), they set out to break the sophomore jinx afflicting second albums, and break it they did by playing to their commercial strengths while remaining faithful to their muse. “Barracuda” (known for its galloping lead guitar riff) and “Kick It Out” (a hard-charging party anthem) satisfied those expecting another “Crazy On You.” But the band also indulged its quieter side, giving Nancy Wilson room to display her abilities as a fluent acoustic guitarist and (on “Treat Me Well”) a folk-tinged vocalist. Moving beyond rock, Heart underpinned the title track with a strutting funk groove and gave “Say Hello” a Caribbean lilt. The hunger for love and the price of fame are reoccurring lyric themes here, and “Love Alive” in particular blends the two topics effectively. Ann Wilson shows maturity as lead vocalist, going full-throttle on the upbeat rockers but singing with nuance and restraint on the introspective tunes. Heart crossed a big hurdle with Little Queen, integrity intact.

Heart's "coming out" album: a must for serious music fans!

Little Queen was the first album after Heart broke away from their Mushroom Record contract and they were able to flex their own creativity. Loads of Led Zepplin influence are heard throughout this LP, and this version on iTunes has added a live version of Stairway to Heaven. (The quality of their covers of Zepplin makes me wonder why they weren't included on the Zepplin tribute CDs!) This song is the epitomy of 70s rock, a mixture of "dog and butterfly" with rockin' anthems like Barracuda and Kick It Out, while gentle ballads such as Love Alive and Cry To Me/Go On Cry (reminiscent of Janis Joplin) remind us of the power of Ann's vocals - as well as Nancy and the "boys" - and the extreme talent of Nancy's guitar skills. A must for any collection.

BARRACUDA...RAWR!

I love Barracuda! It has a rockish flare, and women elegance and swift to it! I HEART this album! Barracuda has a tough flare and rockish style! :)

Heart On!

An impressive compilation of songs. Powerful, soulful, and at times melancholic. From the explosive force of Barracuda to the ethereal mystic mandolins of Sylvan Song, Heart shows off their songwriting and versatility. I particularly love the transitions between Cry to Me and Go On Cry. This is my favorite Heart. ***I love you Ann and Nancy!

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the creative spark behind Heart, a hard rock group who initially found success in the mid-'70s, only to reach greater heights after engineering a major comeback a decade later. The daughters of a Marine Corps captain, Ann (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy (born March 16, 1954) grew up in both Southern California and Taiwan before the Wilson family settled in Seattle, WA. Throughout their formative years, both were interested in folk and pop music; while Ann never took...
