Album Review

Little Willie John was a unique talent, with a voice that conveyed pain and hurt at an emotional pitch seldom encountered in pop music in the 1950s, or since. John's impassioned, gospel-tinged vocals influenced singers as diverse as Sam Cooke and John Lennon and paved the way for the concept of soul. This guy knew how to put himself over (he sang with both Duke Ellington and Count Basie's bands, remember), and his work for Syd Nathan's King Records from 1953 to 1962 is indispensable. This collection features his biggest hits for the label, including his best-known track, "Fever," which he co-wrote, and his first and last hits, "All Around the World" and "Sleep," and the incredible, burn-the-night-down vocals of "Need Your Love So Bad." A diminutive man with a volatile temper and a drinking problem, John stabbed a man and was sent to prison for manslaughter in 1966, where he died two years later at the age of 31, robbing the world of its first true soul singer, and his story is one of the most tragic in all of pop. The release has the same running order as King's 1996 issue under the same title, but sports different artwork.

An overlooked great

Although John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, he's nowhere as well known as other early rock and roll greats, despite having a wider range than some and being influential on folks like James Brown, who recorded a tribute album, and the Beatles, who covered "Leave My Kitten Alone." His material spans the range from blues ("Need Your Love So Bad") to proto-soul ("Talk to Me, Talk to Me") to straight rock and roll ("Kitten"). His voice is excellent, like a bluesier Sam Cooke, and the songs found here are good to great. Peggy Lee's "Fever" is an imaginative re-invention of the song, but everyone should know John's original too.

wow

i never heard of this guy before being 22 and all... but man this guy is great...but im still having a hard time understanding he is a guy he sounds like nina simone

Feel this

Little Willie John inspired a generation of early rock and soul legends and so has touched all of rock and soul ever since. His early demise was a tragedy. Listen to "Need Your Love So Bad" and, if you're not moved, check your pulse. An interesting follow up is to then listen to Peter Green's version from his early days with Fleetwood Mac.

Biography

Born: November 15, 1937 in Cullendale, AR

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '50s, '60s

He never received the accolades given to the likes of Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter, and James Brown, but Little Willie John ranks as one of R&B's most influential performers. His muscular high timbre and enormous technical and emotional range belied his young age (his first hit came when he was 18), but his mid-'50s work for Syd Nathan's King label would play a great part in the way soul music would sound. Everyone from Cooke,...
