iTunes Review
As Black Flag transformed from a hardcore punk band into a tough, atonal free-jazz-metal outfit, the emphasis was clearly on the group’s improvisatory abilities. With newer bassist Kira Roessler, Descendents’ and full-time Flag drummer Bill Stevenson and guitarist Greg Ginn pulling together behind singer Henry Rollins’ angst-ridden howls, the band had become a perfect live animal whose studio albums could only hint at their primal power. Live ‘84 was recorded in one night in San Francisco and features the band in their unvarnished mid-‘80s glory, pulling many tracks from their then current albums, My War, Slip It In and Family Man, while also including obvious crowd-pleasers such as “Nervous Breakdown,” “Six Pack” and “Jealous Again.” Perversely, and completely in line with Black Flag’s determination to challenge their audience, things begin with the then-unknown instrumental “The Process of Weeding Out” that for eight-and-a-half minutes rips like a festering sonic scar. As usual, do NOT file under “easy listening.”
Customer Reviews
this is super good live. way better than Limp Bizkit.
Man, I can't believe people listen to crap like dashboard confessional and deathcab for cutie. This is way better emo, cause instead of cryin' about their emotions, black flag SCREAMS. Check out nothing left inside. That's how we feel inside. We don't feel like the Fray inside, we don't feel like AFI inside. We feel like black flag inside. And if you don't your not a human being anymore. YOur just a plastic shell with a credit card.
THE Black Flag show to have in your collection....
This show catches Black Flag at their height. With Rollins raging and Ginn wailing away on guitar the sheer intensity of the band is captured. The set kicks off with the band hitting "The Process of Weeding Out" which is the perfect intro for Rollins to hit the stage. Once onstage, the band busts through Nervous Breakdown, an energetic, furious song that definitely go the crowd going. From "I Can't Decide" the "Jealous Again" the band hits a furious stride leaving guitar riffs, screaming vocals and knocked out patrons in its dust. The final portions of the set run through some "new" songs at the time with the culmination of "The Bars" putting a bold exclamation point on this one. This concert is one that any beginning or veteran Black Flag fan should have because of the way it catches the spirit of the band at its crescendo. brenta26
Omnipotent Guitar!!!! Wow, decent recording, unbelievable playing!
Can anyone point me to a better cd for downright nasty live playing!? This Cd's recording is average (pretty decent for 84), but the playing is unbelievable especially when it comes to the guitar maestro! Purchase this and I would guarantee money well spent. If you don't want the entire album, shame shame, tunes to check out are "Nervous Breakdown", "I Can't Decide", "Fix Me" (insane guitar), the intense "My War", and "I Love You"
