Wingspan nicely collects both the hits and the highlights from McCartney’s first 15 years after leaving the Beatles. The “Hits” portion points up not just his amazing continued commercial success but his continued abilities to write the right song at the right moment. Whether it’s “Live and Let Die,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Band On the Run,” “Mull of Kintyre,” or “Coming Up,” McCartney delivers one satisfying chorus after another, still managing innovative arrangements and intriguing chord progressions where others might have settled for the obvious and expected. The “History” section also includes several “hits” with “Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Take It Away,” and “No More Lonely Nights” joining McCartney’s lesser-known tunes. “Let Me Roll It” may be the best John Lennon impersonation on record. “Helen Wheels” is one of Mac’s most convincing rockers, “Waterfalls” one of his most sincere ballads. Whether solo or with his band Wings, McCartney summoned his creativity to shift with the times. It’s a good place to start with Ram, Band On the Run, Venus and Mars and McCartney II waiting to be discovered soon after.
