iTunes Review

James Brown could elicit gasps and screams with his stop-on-a-dime movements, but the musical shifts on his second volume of Apollo Theater recordings, from 1967, are even more breathtaking. This deluxe remastered edition adds nearly a half hour of sound to the original double LP, including extensions of the slow-drag “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man World” breakdown that recalls JB’s earlier Live at the Apollo and the funk medley that takes in “Let Yourself Go” and its sequel hit “There Was a Time,” among others. The set also nods back to Frank Sinatra’s recent R&B-tinged “That’s Life,” with Brown insisting on both the universality of the human experience and his right to stand next to the great crooner as a musical force. That force was building in snowballing power, as this stunning recording proves.

One Of The BEST Live CD's You'll EVER Own!!

I had the Great Good Fortune of buying this CD whilst out shopping with my Nieces some years ago, and I haven't stopped playing it since! This is an excellently recorded and remastered work; not one bad cut anywhere. Most touching is the 'Thanks' track in which Mr Brown humbly acknowledges his Apollo fans for their support. The fire and intensity of 'There Was A Time' and 'Maybe The Last Time' are the Crown Jewels of the whole Funkfest Shebang, ably assisted by the phenomenal Famous Flames. Also listen for the late great deejay Frankie Crocker as emcee. You'll have a BALL! No true JB Fan should be without this concert masterpiece!!

delicious

James Brown, Maceo and the Band at Their Very Best

I Love a Really Good Live Album. This set up of music from JB's 1968 return to the Apollo is absolutely one of the best live albums to own. I wish I could have been there for real.

"Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" — those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other African-American musicians were so influential over the course of popular music. And no other musician, pop or...
