Album Review

Although Daedelus certainly relies on a lot of computer wizardly when he crafts his albums, the producer proves that he's just as capable of putting on an energetic and dynamic live show as anyone else, be they electronica artists or not. Taken from his July 2007 performance at Low End Theory, a weekly event held at the Airliner that showcases some of L.A.'s finest avant-garde talent, Daedelus' 45-minute set is full of all the musical twists and turns that make live music exciting. While he certainly draws from his studio material, especially his 2006 instrumental album Denies the Day's Demise, Live at Low End Theory finds Daedelus tailoring his songs for the show: there's much more bass here than on his other work, and the drums and keyboard riffs drive the pieces into near house, or tech-house territory at times. The beat, the percussion, is always present, even if muted or hard to find, which means that even the slower, more reflective pieces — the ones in which mellow keys and soft guitar play a major part — that he incorporates here fit in well and add to the completeness of the concert. Dozens and dozens of instrument samples are used, added, and then released, notes buzz and bass crunches, voices will make themselves heard, but it all flows together seamlessly, flawlessly, perfectly, everything controlled by the fingertips of the maestro, synching his laptop and monome, drawing in bits of his songs and looping them around, speeding them up (like what he does on "Samba Grandly," a quicker take of "Samba Legrande"), the whole thing a pastiche of his past and present work and the environment around him, and very exciting indeed.

Great... but!

I dunno if Daedelus controls this but... you really should have put up the percussion lab show, that one blew this out of the water. It's availble free online, so go find Daedelus at Percussion Lab... but still buy this, as Daedelus changes up his stuff all the time.

Get this!

Fantastic Album. I'm not usually one to buy live albums, but this album destroys it! If youre familiar with all of the tracks or already own them I would recommend getting this album anyways. The tracks are all mixed together and mashed up so you'll come away feeling like you heard an entirely different song. It'll make you want to get a Monome right away. I saw him live and playing on a Monome looked like so much fun. I actually got this album from the man himself in a show in FL. (Nicest guy youll ever meet). Its a pumping album and the energy comes right through. I've listened to it from beggining to end at least 30 times. GET IT!!

Daedelus does his thing once more

Live at Low End Theory made my day when I got it. You owe it to yourself to get the whole album, because bits and pieces, although some good on there own, don't stack up as well as playing it all at once; like it was meant to be played. Then After your done digesting this album please go and get Daedelus Live from PrecussionLab!

Biography

Born: Santa Monica, CA

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Born Alfred Weisberg-Roberts in Santa Monica, California, producer/instrumentalist Daedelus wanted to be an inventor from an early age, a sentiment that led to him choosing an artistic moniker (in Greek mythology, Daedelus was known as an inventor, although Weisberg-Roberts also cites the character Stephan Dedalus in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man — as well as the ship in the Japanese cartoon Robotech — as equally valid reasons for his selection) when he began releasing...
