Neil Young has always been a captivating live performer, whether it’s leading the feedback-drenched manic panic of Crazy Horse or gently nudging his reflective muse as a solo act with sparse piano and acoustic guitar. This Toronto concert, the second release of the long awaited Neil Young Archives series, is a prime example of the latter. Having experienced wide-ranging success with his 1970 album, After the Gold Rush, and tours with Crosby, Stills and Nash, Young was in the process of putting together what would become one of his best-selling albums, 1972’s Harvest. He was writing prolifically and audiences were treated to early peeks into his emerging song catalog. Future hit “Heart of Gold” is added to “A Man Needs A Maid.” “See the Sky About to Rain,” which wouldn’t see official release until 1974’s On the Beach, and “Bad Fog Of Loneliness,” which never saw release, are presented alongside Young favorites, “Helpless,” “On the Way Home,” “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” and “Ohio.” Most impressive, “Cowgirl in the Sand” and “Down by the River” are stripped of their extended jams and laid emotionally bare.

significant release

This album release heralds a significant upgrade for the more than averagely interested fan. There are basically two widely available releases of live Neil from this era: a bootleg usually known as London '71, and the long out of print Time Fades Away LP. London '71 is pretty close in spirit to this record as it's solo Neil on the same tour with pretty much the same setlist. It's a great show but the sound quality is awful in comparison to this album, which sounds absolutely wonderful. Time Fades Away has heretofore the "best" recordings of "Journey Through the Past" and "Love In Mind," and here Neil produces them in a similar manner, again with stellar recording quality. Other highlights: "On the Way Home" (Neil played this with CSNY in 1969-70; nice to hear a pristine solo version); "Bad Fog of Loneliness," a track up for consideration, but dropped from the final lineup of the Tonights the Night album; "Dance Dance Dance," which disappeared from his repertoire, only to emerge later in mutated form as "Love is a Rose." All in all, a lively performance, crystal clear recording, a great selection of songs from one of Neil's most interesting periods. Highly recommended.

Music Clear and Clean

Amazing how good this sounds to wanting ears. I agree with the reviewer above who wonders what happened to "good music". As a sound designer I am impressed with the quality of this live recording. Even more rewarding is the lack of the usual applause from the audience when they hear the start of a recognized song. You realize they are hearing for the first time, what would soon become classically popular songs recognized around the world. This is not your typical live album with less than quality recordings, it is an acoustic treat from an excellent performer. Thanks Neil.

Oh yeah, NOW I remember what music is.....

In these dark days of war, simplistic politics, and a music scene that, frankly, leaves me befuddled, it is hard to believe that music of such exquisite beauty was once possible. This collection arrives to deliver much needed medicine for a troubled world. I write this stunned on the floor by the magnitude of Neil's talent. I am so grateful that this collection has been released. I hope that you, too, will enjoy these treasures.
