iTunes Review
The 1967 Monterey Pop Festival served as Jimi Hendrix’s American coming-out party. Following a show-stopping performance by the Who, the Experience took the stage and single-handedly revolutionized the concept of rock ’n’ roll performance practice. Hendrix used his instrument like a divining rod, coaxing sounds from it echoing elemental forces rather than conventional notation. He was wholly magnetic, handling the guitar from every conceivable angle and in every possible manner, ending the show with a ritualistic, and highly sexualized, burning of his instrument. His performance propelled him into the consciousness of American culture, and although the music has often taken a back seat to the sheer force of his stage presence, Live At Monterey is indisputable proof that the music from that night was every bit the equal of Hendrix’s act. His version of “Wild Thing” redefines a rock standard, and his cover of “Like a Rolling Stone” is even more jaw-dropping, as he completely repossesses Bob Dylan’s all-but-uncoverable anthem.

History was born on this summer day in Monterey California
In the Summer of Love that nite in Monterey California Jimi Hendrix walk on stage an uknown and walked off stage as the greatest guitarist legend in history. RollingStones founder Brian Jones attended and appeared on stage to introduce Hendrix. Jones was known as "king of the festival". Brian Jones died a year later. The festival became legendary for the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix (who was booked on the insistence of board member Paul McCartney) and The Who. It was also the first major public performance for Janis Joplin, who appeared as a member of Big Brother and The Holding Company, and Otis Redding, backed by Booker T. & The MG's. Redding would die only a few months later. The artists performed for free, with all revenue donated to charity, with the exception of Ravi Shankar, who was paid $3,000 for his afternoon-long performance on the sitar. More than 200,000 people attended the festival, which had a nominal $1 entrance fee. The festival is generally regarded (along with the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band released two weeks earlier) as the apex of the so-called "Summer of Love".
This is where is all started.
Jimi went to England, formed a band and came back to the US to change everyone's perspective of rock 'n' roll with his performance at Monterey. Wow! A must have for any fan of Hendrix and/or electric guitar. This material was first released on vinyl with Jimi on one side of the record and Otis Redding on the other with an electrifing performance himself. Hint, hint iTunes!
AWESOME!!!
I bought this on cassette tape about 20 years ago. It wore out long ago and when I went to replace it, it was out of print. I've also seen the video footage of this perfomance. There were some pretty big names in the audience watching that had heard of him, but had previously not listened to him - it is so cool to see them sitting there with jaws wide open as Jimi f'n tore it up. This is a must for any fan of the guitar, rock and/or Hendrix. Period.
