iTunes Review

Born Matthew Miller, Matisyahu initially seemed a novelty: a Lubavitch Hasidic Jew rapping and singing over a reggae groove. Except it became clear under further inspection that his music was not a novelty, but a careful construction of the various elements that had influenced the young man as much as his religion. His first volume of recordings from a Texas bar, Live At Stubb’s, helped cement his reputation and now six years later Matisyahu returns with a new backing group, the Dub Trio, to create the sharpest, loosest, most powerful Matisyahu release to date. There’s a brilliant haze falling over “Mist Rising,” an electronica-tinge to “Darkness Into Light” and a trippy, experimental taste to “Youth.” The great sensitivity he brings to “I Will Be Light” could substitute for much lite-FM balladry. “One Day” continues Matisyahu’s pacifist views as he imagines a day with no more war. His voice is in tremendous form and the new band adds a vibrant edge to every tune.

put Jerusalem back on

i waited a long time for a song called Jerusalem on this album and right when it came out the song disappeared from the album. Itunes can you put it back on?

Jerusalem

Yea this is an awesome album that I've really been looking forward to. I didn't realize Jerusalem was only going to be available to those who pre-ordered it though, or else I definitely would have pre-ordered the album. So how can we get the Jerusalem track now???? It was one of the songs I was really looking forward to...

Either way Matisyahu kills it on here...peace and love

I don't know...

I mean, I've been a Matis fan since the beginning. He has matured a while lot, but I'm not feelin it. He lost me after his Youth album (except for One Day, that was amazing). Anyway, still good, but I miss the good ol' Matisyahu.

Genre: Reggae

Years Active: '00s, '10s

When Matisyahu emerged in 2004 with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, his musical persona seemed to some a novelty. Here was a Hasidic Jew — dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard — who nevertheless performed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism over reggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica. Moreover, he punctuated his performances with stage diving. It may have seemed...
