Album Review

Maybe the greatest tribute you can pay a live album is to think to yourself, "I wish I'd been there." Live at the Deaf Club is precisely that kind of live album. Recorded in San Francisco in March 1979, this is the DKs at their peak as the short sharp-shock punksters with brains as well as attitude — not to mention a sharp collective sense of humor. Fronted by legendary smart-ass agitator Jello Biafra, this five-piece Dead Kennedys lineup (Jello, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, and Ted, with guitarist 6025 playing his last gig with the band) blazes through a mighty set that includes such killer material as "California Über Alles," "Kill the Poor," "Holiday in Cambodia," and the surreal encore numbers "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Viva Las Vegas." There's also a previously unreleased track, "Gaslight." Plenty of atmosphere and sizzling repartee, this is entertainment and punk history in one neat, sweetly subversive package. You'll wish you'd been there.

Customer Reviews

If only it were Jello approved,

I would jump on this album right now. But the rights to the works of this band, let's face it, Jello's band were wrangled away from him in court. It's makes me feel like **** to pick sides with this band, but I've gotta go with Jello. Look for the AT seal of quality when buying Dead Kennedy's albums, kids. Accept no substitute! Especially Manifesto.

DO NOT GIVE THE FAKE KENNEDYS ANY MORE MONEY!!!

By buying this album, you are making Jello lose money. If you do this, you are a traitor to the Dead Kennedys and all they stand for. Holiday in Cambodia should NEVER have been played on a freaking pants comercial, and Jello should get money for some of his work, but some things are out of our grasp. But shorting Jello of money and giving the rest of the band our money isn't. DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM!

Why i can't buy this album...

Not only did the band sue Jello over royalties (which is arguable), they won and then sued him again for all the rights to all the music he wrote, then sold it using his name and kept all the money while touring and playing with different singers... All beacuse jello didn't want the band to use "Holiday in Cambodia" in a Levi's commercial, which is the opposite of what this great music stands for... Unfortunately, if you buy this album, Jello has to pay his old band royalties for the songs he wrote... how f'd up is that? He got f'd... and bad. While this is a great collection, with high energy, lot's of good songs, someone is getting screwed if you buy this record. I can't do it.... what a f'd up situation...

Biography

Formed: 1978 in San Francisco, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Dead Kennedys merged revolutionary politics with hardcore punk music and, in the process, became one of the defining hardcore bands. Often, they were more notable for their politics than their music, but that was part of their impact. The Kennedys were more inspired by British punk and the fiery, revolutionary-implied politics of the Sex Pistols than the artier tendencies of New York punk rockers. Under the direction of lead vocalist Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys became the most political and...
