Album Review
Lucinda Williams has earned a reputation for her meticulous approach to making albums, but a careful listen to her work suggests that she isn't trying to make her music sound perfect, she just wants it to sound right, and she isn't afraid to spend the extra time waiting for the charmed moment to get caught on tape. This attitude seems to be borne out in her first-ever concert album, Live @ The Fillmore, which manages to sound carefully considered, and a model of "warts and all" authenticity at the same time. Recorded during a three-night stand in San Francisco, the album captures Williams' band in superb form — Doug Pettibone's guitars, Taras Prodaniuk's bass, and Jim Christie's drums merge into a tight and emphatic groove machine that can match Williams's many moods, whether she's quietly contemplative on "Blue," rocking out hard on "Changed the Locks," or howling the blues on "Essence," while the deeply resonant recording and mix gives them the royal treatment. Williams herself is a slightly more complicated matter here — her performance is deeply into the spirit, so much so that sometimes her melismatic wanderings and broad phrasing sound like they're verging on caricature. But this is clearly a recording of a performance, and by the time we get to the end of disc two, the broad strokes have coalesced into something quite remarkable; as Williams searches through the nooks and crannies of her songs, you sense she's discovering things that she didn't expect to find, and it's a tremendous thing to hear. Lucinda Williams is an artist who writes from her soul, and she's thoroughly unafraid of letting her passion show when she sings. If that makes for strained technique, it also results in very real art, and this album offers a privileged glimpse of a singular songwriter in full flight.
Customer Reviews
Lucinda Raw and LIVE!
I wasn't too sure about this CD because I have most the studio albums and why do I need a live album with most of the same material? Well, first of all if you've seen Wilco play live you will have a reference point to the kind of guitar razing that these guys can do. Wilco has been deconstructing the guitar solo, and there are places on this album where the same thing happens. It is quite awesome, the eight minute "Joy" has a completely awesome guitar jam that gets my blood pumping everytime its so insanely good. The best part is that the playing is perfectly matched with the singing and lyrics so that everything comes together with the perfect emotional punch. If you want to be overhauled, listen to Change the Locks, Atonement, Righteously, and Real Live Bleeding Fingers & Broken Guitar Strings. Simply FANTASTIC, this guy totally unleashes on his guitar. Anyway, if you had any doubt, Lucinda and her band come together perfectly on this album and I highly recommend it.
Stone Country - What Country Music Should Be
I was fortunate enough to have been in attendance for the recording of this album during her 3 night tour at the Fillmore in San Francisco. I found a spot, leaned up against the stage on the right hand side and witnessed a singer/songwriter that will go down in history as one of the all time greats. She told us they were recording a live album and when I left, I couldn't wait for the album to come out. I actually own the iTunes version, CD version and a 3 LP vinyl set. There are too many things to say about each and every song on this album. It's a masterpeice and yes I'm a fan so I'm biased. Listen to it and you'll be a LU fan forever.
Raw beauty
Nothing better than listening to beautiful, raw and inspired music. This record fits the bill. The cream of the crop in country music and music in general. Lucinda is totally on, worth every penny!
