Album Review

You could expect Isaac Hayes to be in his element at a resort venue — lounge soul was his forte, and this double album offers almost two hours of it. Hayes demonstrates his versatility by getting "Shaft" out of the way right off the bat and alternating between originals and covers of a wide range of tunes, including "Light My Fire," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "Rock Me Baby," "Stormy Monday Blues," "Feelin' Alright," and "It's Too Late" (yes, the Carole King song). Often these are linked together, of course, by Hayes' brotherly raps; for Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," he tests the limits, stretching the tune just past the ten-minute mark.

Customer Reviews

Raw and funky.

My favorite album by the late master. Rest in Peace. (August 10th 2008) PS: "Ain't No Sunshine" is the bomb.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE

This CD is through and through. Not a bad song on it not to mention the cover songs you my be familiar with; Light My Fire, Use Me, Rock Me Baby, Feeling Alright. Fusion of jazzy, funk, soul, and rock all of the happining sounds of the time focused into a great performance. This guy was feeling good tonight.

A Must Have for the blues/jazz/funk enthusiast

I was first introduced to this album while going through my step father's old record collection some 15 years ago. If it weren't for the interesting covers that he did by artist such as Carol King I would have never given this or any music several generations older than me a chance. Issac & this album in particular showed me that there is more to music than just Hip Hop and R&B. I'm still going through time digging and listening. Rest in Peace Isaac!
