iTunes Review
Daryl Hall & John Oates’ return to the Troubadour in May of 2008 was a triumph for the long-running duo. The band’s music enjoyed a renaissance in the ‘90s and ‘00s, when a younger generation began to acknowledge their accomplishments. Though the duo had always been studio wizards, Live At the Troubadour emphasizes their songwriting skills. The performance is understated, featuring Hall and Oates on piano and acoustic guitar backed by a politely pared-down band. These renditions underscore the duo’s sense of sweetened soul, especially in “It’s Uncanny,” “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone,” “One On One,” “Rich Girl” and “Abandoned Luncheonette.” While the setting brings out the best in the band’s oldest songs (they last performed at the Troubadour in 1973, as an opening act), 2002’s “Getaway Car” fits easily into the proceedings. Even the band’s famous ‘80s hits (“Maneater,” “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes”) are played smooth, with newfound calm and self-assurance. Hall & Oates are obviously at ease with their unique legacy, and 40 years after starting a friendship the duo plays their back catalog with matured grace.

Musically....this is stunning
I was never a big Hall & Oates fan. In fact, in high school I probably laughed at them. While flipping through the tube I saw this performance running on the local PBS station. Within 3 bars I was hooked.
Musically, this performance is just a complete joy with rich sounds from a quasi "unplugged" session. There are layers of acoustics and the arrangements on the songs have given them a much more timeless reverence instead of cheeseball 80s. The musicianship and warmth the band exudes musically stands as a testament to talent and playing together for some time.
Darryl Hall can flat out sing. I'm not talking about some 17 year old American Idol tart gushing up and down a scale. This man injects a lot more soul in his style than I remember, proving yet again that life has a way of making better musicians. In fact, the whole band comes off more bluesy in style with lots of jazz undercurrent and Hall even swings towards gospel at times. If you didn't know the songs you might think you were listening to a great recording of a Dave Matthews concert.
The arrangements of the songs are deftly executed and musically, no band could sound better. If you like to hear great musicians that put themselves in another class as a band then you buy this recording. If you like Hall and Oates, that's just a bonus.
They still got it!
"Sara Smile" is a great track and shows the talent of these two legends. Awesome and worthy of the Grammy Nomination!
Good, but...
I absolutely love Hall & Oates. Their soulfull grooves and stunnng harmonies come from a time when music was pure and real. But is it just me, or does John`s vocals sound strained on this CD?
