iTunes Review
“Jazz-rock” was becoming the rage in 1969, with horn-laden outfits blaring their way into the Top 40 like new little big bands. Brassless (give or take those few bars of trumpet on Anthem of the Sun), the Grateful Dead nonetheless worked their own space-jazz mojo on Live/Dead, a sprawling set recorded at several California gigs. The band moves from a ruminative “Dark Star” (an entire side of the original double LP) to definitive, even transcendent rollin’-and-tumblin’ takes on “The Eleven” and Bobby Bland’s“Turn On Your Love Light.” Make no mistake, this was also rock music — Dead music, owing much to folk and country while paying its dues to, say, Miles Davis’ various rhythm sections. While standing as a high point in the Dead’s catalog, it also pointed the way for the Allman Brothers Band, who would soon be laying down similarly rich, epic-length performances by way of topping their own early work. This edition’s bonus tracks include a single version of “Dark Star” and a radio ad.

iTunes Don't Have No Mercy
by NiciunDark Star is exceptionally good, but the one outstanding track is Death Don't Have No Mercy. The rest of the album is okay, not bad, but these two tracks are the ones you want.
This is surely the "growing up grateful" soundtrack of my life...
by ChinaKatSunflowerI will never forget the first time (and the last time live), that I heard the Grateful Dead. If you are hearing this album for the first time, you won't either. My older brother felt "it was time" for me to be properly exposed to The Dead when I was about 13 years old. Similar to the story of another reviewer, he turned out the lights, lit some candles, broke out the bong and turned on Live Dead...I will never forget that evening. I will always remember how St. Stephen broke through every childish musical barrier in my mind. This album is quintessential Dead and IMHO the best album for turning on non-believers or those who think Touch of Grey is their best song. This album is truly "lightning in a bottle" for me too and it changed my entire life, truly. I went on to see my first show after hearing this album, 4/2/89 in Pittsburgh @ the Civic Arena. I saw many others after that, but there will always be that spot in my heart reserved for Live Dead and I always come back to it. I rear-ended another car and it caused a 15 car pile up on the highway coming back from a Deer Creek, IN show, listening to this album. Love Light was playing and I wouldn't get out of the car until it ended - I sat there with my eyes closed, jammin' and feelin' it, and all the while the people I hit are standing outside my window shaking their heads - "goddamn deadheads!" LOL If that doesn't tempt you to take a listen and broaden your musical mind, then I don't know what will :-)
(RIP Jerry...we miss you. I woke up to find out that I am the eyes of the world and am now an addictions counselor, all because of you :-) xoxo)
what The Dead were all about
by dead_head_8503this is the dead album that had to be made. forget (most) studio recordings, The Dead are a LIVE band. what is recorded here is probabaly the quintesential recording of the band. the song dark star has been called the defintion of the dead, and the version here is considered by many to be the best. st. stephen is twice as good as the one on axomoxoa. the eleven and lovelight are like playing with fire. before dicks picks and other live releases this, along with E72 and skull and roses, is what people listened to besides whatever bootleg tapes they could get their hands on. it is an album which shoud be in every dead collection.
