Album Review

In smooth jazz, there can be a major disparity between how artists sound in the studio and how they sound on-stage. Smooth jazz musicians who provide stiff, formulaic, unimaginative studio recordings for radio programmers often sound a lot more spontaneous and inspired when they're in a live setting; the improvisatory instincts that they go out of their way to repress in the studio are more likely to come out in front of a live audience. Brian Culbertson is a perfectly example. The keyboardist/trombonist has recorded more than his share of forgettable background music in the studio, but on-stage, Culbertson is a lot more loose and spontaneous. And his better instincts often prevail on Live from the Inside. This 2009 recording didn't actually take place in a nightclub or amphitheater, but rather, at Capitol Records' Studio A in Los Angeles. Culbertson favors a live-in-the-studio approach, and most of his performances have the sort of spontaneity he would bring to a club or amphitheater gig. Instead of burying his chops under layers and layers of needless production, he frequently lets them flow and allows his edgier side to come out. That said, no one will mistake Live from the Inside for hard bop; R&B and pop considerations are a big part of the equation on "Always Remember," "So Good," and other groove-oriented tunes. This is commercial music, without a doubt. But it's commercial music that, for the most part, has some guts. A few of the lighter tracks are a little too syrupy for their own good. But all things considered, Live from the Inside is one of the more substantial releases in Culbertson's catalog.

Fall Cleaning

I must say it's hard for me to appreciate live recordings when you can really appreciate life performances. On the other hand, there are some exceptions and this is one of them. If you are fall cleaning and really want to get it done, then put on this entire play list and "get it done" I guess when it's good music it really doesn't matter if it's live or memorex lol. Keep up the great work Brian!!!

Just Good Jazz

To truely appreciate what is going on in this album listen to a cut on this album, then go back and listen to the original song on a previous album. Culbertson changes the pace, tempo, and instruments for songs thus creating... true jazz improv. Take "Get It On" from the Nice and Slow album or "Our Love" from the Come On Up album as two good examples. Listen to them on the original albums, then listen to them on this album. He improvs, true jazz at it's best. Alex Bugnon does this well in his live concerts and Steve Oliver's recent live album does this very well. It's the true link between the smooth jazz that some love to hate and the roots of jazz, improvisation. For those who are new to Culbertson, buy this album, get a feel for it and then go back and listen to the origianl tracks from the previous album to appreciate the work put in. It's truely rare to hear an album that is is exactly how it would be live. This is good jazz.

The Closer

Brian Culbertson always delivers. His live CD is no exception. These are all
hyped-up, reved-up versions of his most popular hits...with the exception of the
stripped-down version of "All About You" which is my personal favorite. Tight arrangements,
excellent orchestration make this a must have for all officianado of "live" projects!

Even though Brian Culbertson might be categorized as jazz lite, his music has enough "oomph" to keep you interested. The talented composer, arranger, keyboardist, and trombonist displayed a talent beyond his years at an early age, and credits his dad with helping him develop an ear for the type of music he makes. His father, Jim Culbertson, a respected high-school jazz band director and trumpeter, cultivated a love of sanguine sounds in the young Brian, who eagerly listened to anything his dad put...
