Album Review

About five years after he'd left the Eagles, Randy Meisner recorded this live set in Dallas on December 2, 1982, before a none-too-big or (at times, at least) enthusiastic-sounding crowd. To his credit, at this point he wasn't resting on his work with the Eagles, filling up most of the set with songs from his trio of albums from the late '70s and early '80s, though he did include the Eagles' "Try and Love Again" and "Take It to the Limit." Still, it's bland if slickly executed singer/songwriter rock, touched with traces of country, folk, and pop, but less so than the work of the Eagles. Like many live albums, it's one for fans only, whether of the Eagles and/or (less likely) Meisner's solo work. The packaging is disappointing in that it has few details of the show, though it does at least list the musicians and print the lyrics. There are, incidentally, two versions of "Take It to the Limit," one of them identified as an "alternate mix."

Good songs often overlooked

Meisner left the eagles after Hotel California when Henley pretty much took over the group. His solo albums didn't attact much attention. He did contribute to all Eagles albums and seems to have been most influencial in their early years. Most of the songs on this album are uniquely his but you can certainly see his influence on the Eagles. I think he's been overlooked, maybe people expected him to sound just like the eagles. At any rate, its worth a listen and pretty good rock.

Live in Dallas

Randy Meisner, the forgotten Eagle, and one of my favorite band members. He didn't make the big time like Glenn Frey or Don Henley, but still has many good songs and a must to listen to by any real Eagle and Poco fan. My favorite CD is "One More Song", but I'm not finding two of his CD's on iTunes. Anyway, all of his CD's are worth checking into and adding to your collection.

For a while, at the dawn of the 1970s, Randy Meisner looked to be one of California rock's also-rans — a prodigious talent on vocals and bass, he moved up through the ranks of '60s bands and was poised for a big break as a member of Poco, only to exit that band on the eve of the completion of their debut album. And then he got a second bite of the apple as a member of the Eagles, only to quit in the wake of their biggest album, Hotel California. Born in Scottsbluff, NE, in 1946, Meisner co-founded...
