iTunes Review

On 1999’s Live in Texas, Lyle Lovett turns on his sagebrush-dry charm to the fullest while giving his Large Band room to strut its stuff. This engaging in-concert recording is slanted towards his jazzier side, though songs like the wry “If I Had a Boat” and the haunting “North Dakota” (featuring a guest vocal by Rickie Lee Jones) give a taste of his Texas troubadour side. Lovett’s gifts as a poetic lyricist and polished composer often obscure his talents as a witty, odd-but-lovable stage performer. Here, though, his comic timing and nuanced phrasing is given full reign on “She’s No Lady,” “Here I Am,” “That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas)” and other showstoppers. From the quirky “Penguins” to the stirring “Church,” he runs through a gamut of moods in this set, which is also noteworthy as a showcase for the amazing Francine Reed, a mainstay of the Lovett Large Band tours. Her gutsy vocals on the ‘20s blues number “Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues” fires up the crowd before Lovett joins her for a steamy rendition of his “M-O-N-E-Y.” Live in Texas catches Lyle and his bandmates at their eclectic, crowd-pleasing best.

Customer Reviews

Almost Perfect

Lyle lovett has combined is soothing voice into a melodic blues/country atmosphere with a little texas spirit. You can hear his heart pouring out from him. It's fun to listen to and every time I do I feel like a weight just lifted off my chest.

Lyle Lovett is not country

He's not even in the same neighborhood as country. He's blues, big band, swing, honky-tonk, but not country. He's also got a smooth, sexy voice and a delivery that cannot be beat. Anyone who doesn't like Lyle Lovett, has never listened to Lyle Lovett.

My Favorite Album

Im A DJ From chicago and play mostly rap/hip-hop and todays poular music. Ive owned this album since it came out, its my favorite one and it has a great rythm all throughout it.

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van Zandt, combining a talent for incisive, witty lyrical detail with an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop. Lovett's literate, multi-layered songs...
