Album Review

Live in the Lou follows over a year of touring for Story of the Year's debut LP Page Avenue, and sets up a sophomore studio effort. It's a "gift to the fans"-type package, capturing a gig in their hometown of St. Louis and including a DVD with live, behind-the-scenes, and home video footage stretching all the way back to when Story was still called Big Blue Monkey. That was before they moved to LA to record Page Avenue with Goldfinger impresario John Feldmann, before their ease into a sort of cross between Deftones and Dashboard Confessional, and before the strings of Warped Tour dates. That's the sound they feature on Live in the Lou, where post-grunge guitar lines are amplified by metal flourishes and periodically reigned in by stretches of chorus channel introspection. And Story of the Year prove to be a capable live band. Still, while the sound mix is strong and Story's guitarists hit their marks, they nevertheless sound a little muddled. Instead, it's drummer Josh Willis and vocalist Dan Marsala who drive the raucous set standouts "Divide and Conquer," "Dive Right In," and "Burning Years." Marsala makes up for some slips in key with his vigorous screaming and numerous crowd shout-outs, and Willis controls as best he can Story's ambitious, but occasionally too-ambitious songwriting dynamics. The hometown crowd certainly doesn't mind the slight missteps. Marsala is accompanied by a fawning teenage girl chorus for the suicide melodrama "Anthem of Our Dying Day," and everyone responds heartily to "This is the best show of the tour!" and "What up St. Louis?!" exclamations. They're also treated to a brand new song, the promisingly raw "Heart of Polka Is Still Beating." Fans will recognize everything else in the set as coming from Page Avenue. [Live in the Lou's accompanying DVD also included the videos for singles "Until the Day I Die" and "Anthem of Our Dying Day"."]

wow... i am really dissapointed...

i looove story of the year. but they just took thier reputation, threw it up in the air, and shot it with a BAZOOKA (twice) then dumped some acid on it and smushed it with a tractor. after that, some crazed maniac beat it with a bat for a couple hours then threw it in the ocean to float away for ever.....

wow

i accidentally bought live in the lou thinking it was the page avenue album because it had the same songs. but i was really surprised on how much more i enjoyed teh music when it was in live concert. you really feel the music playing when the 100,000 or so fans are screaming the lyrics along on cue. the vocals arent as good though because its live, but i definitly dont regret buying this album. it has some great introductory intrumental things and so on...i would definitly recomend it to any story of the year fan!

are they good or bad live?

well... all i have to say when i saw SOTY live this year at warped tour... they ROCKED!!!! this album just doesnt do them justice. this was recorded their first year after their debut cd so they probably werent the greatest yet. But now... They rock... i dont recommend this album if you dont know SOTY. ive been with them since page avenue and i bought this when it came out and i dont listen to it becuase it just doesnt do them justice. Overall i dont recommend this album

Biography

Formed: 1995 in St. Louis, MO

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Story of the Year took root in the late '90s under a different name, Big Blue Monkey, in St. Louis, MO. At the time of its inception, the band's sound was much heavier (similar to the Deftones), and the lineup that would eventually become Story of the Year was not yet in place. Big Blue Monkey played frequent shows in the St. Louis area, issued several EPs, and endured the lineup fluctuations typical to any struggling combo. Creative and persistent self-promotion soon caught the ear of producer John...
