Album Review
This Steps Ahead concert (which has long been available on laser disc) has both good and bad points. Michael Brecker's virtuosic tenor solos show a great deal of passion and creativity within the genre. Also Mike Maineri's vibes are an attractive part of the ensemble sound, making the R&B-ish unit sound like Spyro Gyra with guts. Unfortunately the rhythm section (which consists of guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Steve Smith) is never subtle, the rhythms are bombastic and the electronics (including at one point a drum machine) are excessive. The solos might be fiery but the unimaginative backup makes this potentially super band often sound run of the mill and monotonous. There are much better Steps Ahead concerts to preserve than this one.

Review?
The review for the record is totally off. This is an unbelievable concert cd. Steps Ahead are an electronic jazz-fusion group... and their sound is not excesssive. If you are a jazz fan looking for something with some kick... buy it. If your a rock fan looking for something more virtuosic... buy it. And if you don't want to buy the whole thing buy "Beruit."
Absolutely Steps Ahead!
No doubt about it, this is the best Steps Ahead lineup ever. You can't top Michael Brecker on sax and his amazing EWI performance on Sentimental Mood. This is Mainieri and Brecker at their best. I thought the original "Trains" album performances couldn't be topped, but apparently I was wrong, because they slammed it in Tokyo on this recording. This is a must have for any Michael Brecker or Steps Ahead fan.

You can see the video of "Beirut" on youtube. Viewing the interactions between the musicians improves the experience of listening to such great music.
