iTunes Review

Over the years, Jars of Clay has oscillated between melancholy folk-pop, upbeat retro-rock, and brooding atmospheric numbers. Live Monsters documents the band’s more muscular side by offering in-concert versions of tunes from their Good Monsters album. This eclectic Christian unit acquits itself well as it strips away all studio polish and holds forth in unfiltered glory. Singer Dan Haseltine’s vocals take on a harsher, more urgent edge on “Work” and “Good Monsters,” while “Light Gives Heat” finds him projecting a moodily prophetic air. The band plays with sustained intensity, riding an insistent pulse on “There Is a River” and slicing away like a punk act on the title tune. “Dead Man (Carry Me),” is a particular high point, exceeding the taut power of the studio version. For all their versatility and lyric intelligence, Jars of Clay can sometimes sound overly mannered and pristine at times, but Live Monsters allows them to unleash their inner rock animal without sacrificing the spiritual essence of their songs. More live releases like this one would be most welcome.

Seriously Good Music

Jars of Clay- Most likely in my opinion the most influential band of our time. Their music is inspiring. If you have never seen them live before you are missing out. This cd is great, but doesnt do their live show justice. You must SEE THEM IN CONCERT IN PERSON! Buy this cd!

As good in concert as in the studio, maybe better

Awesome acoustics, great percussion, the song "Oh My God" is so deep lyrically and its message is driven home by the crescendo of drums and acoustics. Only negative is the number of songs are limited, but the price is great and the music can, tirelessly, be listened to over and over leaving you only wanting more

JUST DO IT!

live monsters takes great concert moments and puts them together for a rare chance to re-live a concert. if you ever get a chance to see these guys live in concert, GO!!! don't even think, just do it. they are awesome performers and their music is incredible live. their energy during the shows makes you really feel the songs and their passion for what they do will blow you away. inspiring songwriters and just plain great music. three words: AWESOME, AWESOME BAND!!!!

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Greenville, IL

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence...
