Album Review

Van Halen assembled its first live album, the two-CD Live: Right Here, Right Now, from a collection of tapes dating from 1985, when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth, to 1993. Only a few songs recall Roth's days, and ten of the 11 songs from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge are featured. Live: Right Here, Right Now deserves to be in any real Van Halen fan's collection; those who aren't devoted to the band would be advised to stick with the original albums.

Customer Reviews

Van Halen is BOSS

This is Van Halen's only live album, and man is it a good one. Eddie shreds like never before on "316 (Live)" (an 11 minute solo including pieces from 316, Spanish Fly, Cathedral, and Eruption), Alex tears it up on his drum solo, and Michael Anthony fires away with his thundering bass solo. The majority of the songs are Hagar-era hits with the exception of "Panama", "Jump", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and "You Really Got Me". Surprisingly, some of these live versions are better than the studio versions. Get this album now!

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art...
