iTunes Review
With all the baggage and negative publicity she receives, it's easy to forget how powerful Courtney Love could be as a rocker. From the beginning, her voice could peel paint, and her songs felt like they came from the deepest recesses of her soul. Anger, frustration, and madness oozed from her like blood from an open wound. Live Through This is Love's single greatest moment, where all that pathos and passion intersect with strapping hard rock. The debate that still simmers over whether Kurt Cobain helped her write this album is moot. Without a doubt, undeniably devastating and one of the best rock records of the '90s.
Customer Reviews
this is the album that changed my life
"love" her or hate her Courtney Love, and this album seemed to be the only culturual influence that truly shaped the person i am. I almost feel offended and exhausted by this album because i feel as if it has ripped piece of my life apart, and opened them up for inspection by the public. This album holds many things close to my heart. "Violet," "Miss World," and "Doll Parts" pretty much sum up my existance on this earth for the last 16 years. "Softer, softest" brings back painful childhood memories while soothing the inner-child in me. "She Walks on me," and "Rockstar" provide me with enough angst to feed about half of the nations starving teenagers. This album is an accomplishment and a highly respected art form. I've bought it three times since 1997 because I've worn it out.
Getting Past Courtney Love
As atrociously boring and sad as Courtney Love's personal life is, this album is one of the best of the mid 90's. Both angry and melodic, the lyrics are honest and unflinching. And when Love slows down her voice comes through as truly gentle, wounded, and pleasing. I know many a person who got through high school listening to this album, and it counts as one of those rare old albums that I still throw on every once in a while. Plus, on Live Through This, all the songs are good--something that seems to be getting rarer in an industry driven by selling singles.
One of the best of the 90s
Say what you want about Courtney Love, but she manged - even through all her heroin, controversies, break downs, tantrums - to create an epic album. Live Through This, the sophomore release of Love's band Hole, is my favorite album, the album that changed my life and helped me turn into the person I am today. I'm not a sappy person, but god, this album was exactly what I needed. I discovered it around the age of 13 and I was lost, I had no idea who I was or what to do. This set me in the CORRECT direction, believe it or not.
1. Violet - 5/5 - This song is the most powerful one on the album, not many people can yell like Courtney. I've listened to it non-stop to get out anger and other emotions that aren't welcome.
2. Miss World - 5/5 - Her voice is so feminine in this. The chorus is total girl-pride, and the song is a mix of soft vocals and group choruses. I believe the line "kill me pills" is from Anne Sexton.
3. Plump - 4/5 - This is a rougher song than the rest. It's loud and grinding but a good song to complete the ambiance of the album.
4. Asking For It - 4/5 - This song is very strong lyrically, and the tune is wonderful but I feel like it drags a little during the middle.
5. Jennifer's Body - 5/5 - I adore this song. The lyrics are up for analyzing and the yelling is absolutely awesome. Gets emotions out.
6. Doll Parts - 5/5 - Single from the album. Everyone loves this song.
7. Credit In the Straight World - 3/5 - The weakest song on the album. The beginning is cool and the lyrics are interesting but the song doesn't sound very "Hole". Not too much emotion in it.
8. Softer, Softest - 4/5 - The lyrics are bizarre and the song rather slow, but while it is not a personal favorite of mine a lot of people dig this song.
9. She Walks On Me - 5/5 - Absolutely raw rock and roll, and the first song I adored by Hole.
10. I Think That I Would Die - 5/5 - The bridge is the best moment in all of rock and roll history. Enough said.
11. Gutless - 5/5 - I repeated the first four lines all through middle school. Memories. Intense.
12. Rock Star - 4/5 - This was changed at the last minute due to Cobain's suicide. It's supposed to be called "Olympia" but the track listing was messed up because of the switch. I think this is a really awesome song, but not the best song to end the album.
There you have it. You can bash Love as a talentless hanger-on, but this piece of art will contradict that. It's all looking into her, and this album is one of the most important pieces of music I have ever come across.
