Album Review

Listen to this collection, put together to capitalize on the explosive growth in the group's audience after Aqualung, and it's easy to understand just how fine a group Jethro Tull was in the early '70s. Most of the songs, apart from a few heavily played album tracks ("Song for Jeffrey," etc.) and a pair of live tracks from a 1970 Carnegie Hall show, came off of singles and EPs that, apart from the title song, were scarcely known in America, and it's all so solid that it needs no apology or explanation. Not only was Ian Anderson writing solid songs every time out, but the group's rhythm section was about the best in progressive rock's pop division. Along with any of the group's first five albums, this collection is seminal and essential to any Tull collection, and the only compilation by the group that is a must-own disc.

Customer Reviews

Great!

Awesome album and at $6.99 you can't go wrong!

An Embarrassment

No excuse for not including "Bouree" and "Teacher", two of the defining Tull songs. A continuing aggravation that negates the value of this album for anyone familiar with the original.

First compilation album of sorts from the band

One of Jethro Tull's best albums showcasing the large amount of hits the band had on EPs and 45s but not yet put onto album yet. The entire album is awesome.

Love Story was, I believe, the last song Mick Abrahams played guitar on before he left. And then there is the classic Living in the Past showcasing Glenn Cornick's bass work while he was with the band up to and including Benefit (and maybe one track on Aqualung). For a collection of hits put together, the album just flows all the way through for an awesome listening experience.

Jethro Tull was a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their...
