iTunes Review
Stockholm’s Peter Morén, Björn Yttling, and John Eriksson formed this indie-pop band in 1999 and spent the next several years honing its craft by the way of relatively under-the-radar EPs and full-lengths. Then, thanks to 2006’s whistle-laden sparkler “Young Folks,” the Swedish trio suddenly found itself on the lips of tastemakers everywhere. With this success tucked neatly in its back pocket, Peter, Bjorn, and John mostly focused on individual endeavors before unveiling 2009’s Living Thing which true to its name plays out like a living, breathing work of art. (In fact, “Blue Period Picasso” finds the group personifying a museum painting.) All told, it’s the most New Wave-leaning collection in Peter Bjorn and John’s catalogue — from the rubbery stomp of “Nothing to Worry About” to the kinetic pulse of “It Don’t Move Me” to industrial-style breakdowns on harmony-washed “Just the Past.” Still, the trio displays indie-pop mastery, ranging from precious serenading (“I Want You”) to seething anthem (“Lay It Down”), and shades of John Lennon’s soulful, vocal honesty appear on the sparse, finger-snapping ballad “Stay This Way.”

Living Thing is the future of music. Peter Bjorn and John are back, stronger than ever, and bringing another epic sound collection since the smash of Writer's Block. PB&J are keeping the world of music fresh and promising, especially in a age where music has taken quite a beating. Living Thing brings everything you may have loved about Writer's Block and builds on top of an already sound structure. Key tracks: Nothing to Worry About, I Want You!, Lay It Down, Stay This Way, Blue Period Picasso, and Last Night. And just wondering, but what the he!l was that STOP PB&J blog bul!$hit?
uggggg....
geesh, this is such a dull and drab album. i can't believe they came out with such a lack luster ablum as a follow up to writer's block. there is nothing catchy, nothing that draws you in, and nothing that captivates the essence of what they are capable of. even the album cover is weak. uggg......
Ehh...
Without question, PB&J are dedicated to their artistic development. Unfortunately, I feel the boys have tried a bit too hard to push the envelope in this latest release. Whereas Writer's Block was a solid and almost effortless collection, Living Thing tries to do too many things at once, resulting in record that can't help but bring itself down under its own weight. Don't get me wrong, there are still a few good songs to be found. Just know that they're just much fewer and farther between than in WB.
