Where is her Grammy Award?
by
Giddens Rateau
Before I listened to this, I asked myself "can this girl sing?" Right when I put the CD into my car, my question was answered. While most music today has mediocre talent and ridiculous amounts of autotune and other plug ins to make vocals sound good, Liz Lohnes has pure talent and an amazing voice that doesn't need tons of studio work. Her voice gives me goosebumps every time.
Just a few thoughts on my favorite songs:
1. Where You Are - The electric piano and the bass catch your attention so fast and your immediately trapped in this great song. I love when the beat drops because it also drops with her vocals "mmmhmmmhhhhhh" "mmmhhhhmmmm" and I just love it. I smile and I'm nodding my head along with it from start to finish. Her sweet voice sings the even sweeter lyrics perfectly on this track. My favorite part of the song is the chorus because she just flows so good with the chorus baseline. Being in a long distance relationship, like I am, really makes this song touching to you. I had this song stuck in my head for days and I kinda still do.
2. Vera's Lullaby- Other than the fact this song is extremely personal, extremely emotional and a true story, the way these powerful lyrics are sang, it just makes me cry every time. I literally breakdown and shed tears when listening to this. It's so hard to lose a friend, and even harder to make a song about that person's loss. The beat is perfect because it is not a cliche song like it usually is when somebody passes away. It's unique and Liz Lohnes pours out her heart into the music for Vera. Rest In Peace.
6. Oh my goodness, my friends and I played this song over and over and over again. The piano and the drums are RIDICULOUS!!!!! Not too heavy, not too light, perfect combination of Hip Hop drums with a pop melody. This song fuses a lot together to make it a hit. Liz's concept of the song is good too. You don't hear many songs with different concepts being described with such vivid imagery like Liz does. Giddens delivers an amazing verse. He's not just rhyming words, his verse actually makes sense and is actually talking about what the song is about. His flow is smooth on the beat and he hits his syllables dead on with the melody. One of the best rap verses I've heard in a long time. Liz and Giddens are definitely a great duet.
8. Why'd You Turn Your Back- I'm doing an awful job at giving these songs their justice, because there are no words good enough to describe them, so this is the last one. The guitar, the drums, her vocals=enough said. Liz kills this one too. The chorus is unbelievable. Lyrics unbelievable. Music unbelievable. Just excellent music. I love the melody for the verses. This is crazy good. Just like every other song.
These 4 songs, and the rest deserve 5 STARS ***** !!! THE WHOLE ALBUM IS GOOD! Liz, keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to me. I love your music.
