Album Review

It would be reasonable to assume that an album called Liza's at the Palace.... is another Liza Minnelli live album, especially since it follows by a couple of months a stint of live appearances she made at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in the fall of 2008. Actually, however, it was, as the small print in the CD booklet reveals, "recorded...at Legacy Recording Studios, NYC." The spine of the CD jewel box even calls it an "original cast recording," which is how it should be treated, as a studio re-creation of the show Minnelli performed at the Palace. While the absence of applause at the end of each song may be disconcerting, deciding to preserve the show in this manner probably was the better idea. Minnelli, 62 years old and determined to keep dancing on-stage, no doubt gives better vocal performances in this controlled environment than she could have if the show actually had been recorded live at the Palace. Each Minnelli live performance, dating back to her nightclub debut at the age of 19 in 1965, has been an expression of her love of traditional pop and old-time show business, even as the songs have changed, at least somewhat. ("Maybe This Time," one of her signature tunes, may well have been in that first show, and it's here, too.) For this show, she has added some appropriate numbers new to her repertoire, notably the funny patter song "If You Hadn't, But You Did" (usually known simply as "If"), in which a woman, having shot her lover down, explains to his corpse why she did it. Mindful of Judy Garland's legendary performances at the Palace in the early '50s, Minnelli updates her mother's "Palace Medley," itself a compendium of tributes to earlier Palace vaudeville singers. And she spends the bulk of the second disc (bookended with her two favorites, "And the World Goes 'Round" and "Theme from New York, New York") re-creating the legendary (but never recorded) 1940s nightclub act of her godmother, Kay Thompson, the multi-talented MGM vocal coach, with a quartet of male singers standing in for the Williams Brothers. This provides Minnelli with a form to do what she does best, evoke and revitalize a golden age of entertainment.

Liza's at the Palace! And she owned the place, if you ask me. I had the good fortune to be there, to witness the entire audience fall under the spell she wove as she energetically and emotionally sang and performed these amazing numbers. How could I possibly not recommend this album and give it the 5 stars it deserves?

Actually, I do wish it was a live recording. Then I would have given it the impossible 6-star rating. :-) The magic of her live performances at the Palace on Broadway doesn't fully come across in this studio recording... the best way I can describe it is to quote from the essential book on Liza's career, "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook", written by Scott Schechter who, in his intro, writes: "Liza Minnelli thrives on what flows back and forth between artist and audience. 'This is the best game of tennis I know of,' was how she succinctly put it, during one recent outburst of love in a packed concert hall." (Check out that book if you're a fan by the way.) Well, I experienced this for myself at the Palace, and so I had hoped this would be a live recording which would better depict it. Don't get your hopes up for that. Most of all, I truly miss the live anectdotes she made during the show. I really miss her personal tales and stories she related between songs, some of which were very touching and some of which were really quite funny! (Oh, and those colored lights of course... so yes, something's missing here...).
Despite this, the songs here are just as brilliant as you could hope for if not more so. At 62, and after all that she's experienced and been through, she rises above your expectations like a phoenix - that, in itself, is so inspiring. She put a great deal of work and effort into this, and yet it seems so effortless and she had fun and this shows. And you'll have fun listening to her music. This isn't a "comeback". This is Liza, shining at her best. Just listen to "I Would Never Leave You", for example - you'll see what I'm talking about.

To fans, I would recommend it without pause... it's simply marvelous and you'll adore it. But honestly, I am relatively new to Liza's music, and this was the first performance she did that I got to see and experience in person; there's a slight chance I might be biased. To those who are not familiar with her, I'd recommend downloading some of the songs on iTunes that look interesting to you, from this as well as older albums, to get a feel for her style, sound, and the way she's developed her talents over the years. If she really grabs your interest, perhaps check out some of her movies if you haven't already... "Arthur" is available here on iTunes, and "Cabaret" is a popular one, etc. And the book I mentioned might be worth looking at as well. When you can get a basic idea of her background and personality and whatnot, the music on this album will be all the more compelling and wonderful. (Especially her tribute to Kay Thompson, her godmother - a brilliantly talented woman in the theatre not to mention the writer of the "Eloise" books many of us grew up with as children.)
Just speaking from my own experience.

Oh, and her rendition of "Cabaret" on here may take you by surprise and leave you with a smile - but definitely familiarize yourself with the original version first to really appreciate what she's saying. :-)

So yeah, 5 stars. It's charming and inspiring and absolutely fabulous. I only wish it were a live recording, but eh, what can ya do. Hope you enjoy! (Frankly, you might wanna check out the album in its CD format what with the cool informative insert included and all... in addition to this lovely collection provided by iTunes of course ;-) ....)
