iTunes Review
Singer-songwriter Zach Condon, leader of Beirut, is still not yet of drinking age, but on his second release he shows himself far more than the one-trick pony his detractors warned about. The group has been included in articles depicting a supposed "new scene" of Balkan-inspired rock music, but the Eastern European influence is already starting to morph into something stranger and more original. The horns are delirious and remind the listener of Nino Rota's Fellini scores as much as the Hungarian group Muzsikas. For those not from the area, the EP's title reproduces the proper pronunciation of Long Island, an island in New York State located close to New York City, where Condon, a native of New Mexico, currently lives. This music is highly recommended to fans of the Decemberists who seek lyrics written from the heart rather than an eighteenth century thesaurus (ditto for Sufjan Stevens fans who've grown tired of that artist's cute, Wes Anderson-y gimmicks). Beirut were already one of the most promising bands in the country; they just inched themselves closer to fulfilling it with these five tunes.
Customer Reviews
Thank you for this.
Building on Gulag Orkestar and then some. I'm enjoying these songs (every single one) even more than the full album. The alternate version of "Scenic World" is breathtaking; the electronics were taken out and it sounds like it was remixed by Yann Tiersen. "My Family's Role in the World Revolution" sounds like a backyard Bolechevik dance party and "Elephant Gun" really showcases Zach's voice as it soars up and down over a complex arrangement of accordians and percussion. Completely different and more original than anything else you'll hear. I just have to thank Beirut for completing my finals week.
Every song is surprisingly great!
I am impressed with the overall quality of this EP. It seems like most EPs are meant to promote one or two good songs, but every song on this 5 song EP is solid. "Elephant Gun," the latest single, is Beirut at its most epic and sweeping. "My Family's Role In the World Revolution" is fast and fun. "Scenic World" is a pleasantly stripped down version of the same song from the last LP. "The Long Island Sound" is a brief transition song that sounds like the last breathes of a brilliant album, yet the EP ends on what is possibly its best or second best song: "Carousels." I can't stop listening to this song. It deserves to be on the next LP. I love the line "Where tonight in a world full of thrills can carry me on." It's nostalgic and upbeat like Beirut's best work.
More great beirut
if you enjoyed the first album "gulag orkestar" then this one too is sure to please. These songs have a different tone compared with the earlier album yet they are all great i like them all. "my families role in the world revolution" and "the long island sound" both are instumental. "Scenic world" is the same song as "scenic world" on the old album but here it is a slightly different version. Great album for people who enjoy beirut.
