iTunes Review

When it comes to the studio side of LCD Soundsystem, nearly everything revolves around the restless mind of James Murphy — New York’s poet laureate of post-punk, twisted techno, and the kind of disco records that used to get burned in baseball stadiums. The band’s live show is more of a group effort, however, a well-oiled dance machine that ranks as one of indie rock’s only guaranteed good times. London Sessions bottles some of that energy like one of John Peel’s classic BBC tapes, easily shifting from the floorboard-pounding rhythms of “Us v Them” and “Pow Pow” to the groove-locked navel-gazing of “I Can Change” and “All My Friends.” And while LCD’s latest — 2009’s This Is Happening album — gets the most love, there’s enough fan favorites from other releases to make this a greatest hits set of sorts. Or at the very least, an excuse to scream "Your city's a sucker! My city's in heat!" from the comfort of your living room.

London Sessions

James Murphy's LCD Soundsystem is not known for drastically different live and/or alternate versions of studio songs. These are no exception, and there are few differences between these and the (often excellent) studio versions. The main difference here is the sense of spontaneity to Murphy's wit--it seems more natural than on record. This new dimension of humor balances out the learned-by-heart dryness of the backing tracks to create an album that is enjoyable, listenable, and featuring tracks appropriately (but not terribly) inferior to the originals.

The rhythm is gonna get you.

How could you not enjoy the loose jangley momentum that LCD bring to anything live. Its another side to their tight album versions of these songs.

Biography

Formed: New York, NY

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

LCD Soundsystem debuted with "Losing My Edge," a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous p*****g contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines...
