Album Review

"The Best of Dave Mason at Columbia" would be a more accurate title, as this doesn't include work from his early-'70s LPs for Blue Thumb. The 19 tracks spotlight selections from seven albums that he recorded for Columbia. Including the hits "We Just Disagree," "Let It Go, Let It Flow," and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," it charts his move from easygoing early-'70s FM rock to a more mainstream AOR pop sound.

As Good As They Get

You don’t hear much about Dave Mason. Even with the airplay his “hits” in the ‘70’s received no one ever talked up the fact that this man honed his skills with the likes of Jimi Hendrix (he played on Jimi’s cover of All Along The Watchtower), Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, and George Harrison – just to name a few. “Long Lost Friend” is well worth the small sum you pay for this a very listenable album. Tracks like Baby Please, It’s Like You Never Left, and All Along The Watchtower unquestionably contain some excellent guitar work. Buy this record – you’ll be happy you did.

This is nice... but.....

A lot of what Dave Mason did in the 1970s is of course missing, as the Blue Thumb recordings are not here. Sans the "partial" Alone Together, iTunes is missing a lot of great Mason material. For example, Dave Mason & Cass Elliott, was released today, 7/6/08. on CD for the first time. This was recorded in either 1970 or 1971... can't recall. But surely iTunes can get their hands on this.. if everyone else can. Way to many, "Best Of's" here and not enough of the core collection of Dave Mason. This is not just with Dave Mason.. look at the Grassroots for example... no actual albums represented in iTunes.. just a bunch of Best Of's and fake Best Of's. This is where iTunes needs to do much better. I am not sure where they are sourcing their music, but it needs to be turned around and corrected.

Missing

Cmon Itunes....no "Lonely Ones" from the "Its Like You Never Left" Album? Stevie Wonder on harmonica and a haunting beautiful song. ADD IT!
