Album Review

Less Than Jake were far from novices when they entered the studio to record their 1995 debut album, Pezcore. Formed in 1992, they came into their own the following year with an exuberant blend of melodic ska-punk. Their enthusiasm was infectious, translating easily from the stage onto disc. By 1994, the group was barraging indie labels with its music, and in turn its 7" and 10" singles peppered the scene, with ubiquitous appearances on numerous compilations of the day. Thus it was to the relief of their many fans that in 1996 LTJ released Losers, Kings, and Things We Don't Understand, a 20-track set that bundled up many of their singles and compilation offerings. Of course, Pezcore was a classic set, but this one arguably best captures the spirit of the band's early years. It's the sheer exhilaration of the music that initially clobbers listeners, all zippy tempos, high-energy performances, and an unerring ear for a melody. In later years, LTJ would list the early Bay Area bands as their strongest influence, but initially they thanked Snuff for turning them from just another generic new-school group into something special. Their horns certainly made LTJ stand out, but listen hard and you'll hear the group's own twists on punk, from the snip of funk that infests "Econolodged" to the twist of hard rock that pops up on "Pez King" and "Wish Pig," the '60s riffs that rip through "Shotgun" and "Glumble," and the jubilant take on old-school punk reinvented for a new generation. As for their covers, like Sid Vicious' take on "My Way," LTJ appropriate songs and make them their own. Although filled with anthems of the age, not every track here is a winner — one can't bash out this much music this fast and turn out a gem every time — but there are no clunkers, either. Every longstanding fan has his/her favorite tracks, and this reissue now allows members of a whole new generation to find their own within. A must-have set. [This edition of Losers, Kings, and Things We Don't Understand pairs the CD of the original album with a DVD of the band performing many of its songs live. As with the CD, there's no information provided, but it's obvious that some of the footage dates back to the band's earliest years. At times the film quality is pretty mediocre, but fans won't care, for the performances rock and the lineup and haircuts give pertinent clues as to dates.]

Greatness

This is the second Less Than Jake "album". Truth is, it's not really an album, but actually a collection of all their songs from vinyls which were released before their debut album. Anyway, it's a lot of fun. You need this.

Awesome!!

This is definitely one of their best albums. There really is no advantage to buying this just for the songs. I mean the quality is a little better (not much) but to have this fantastic album live is unbelievable. Buy this is a store though for a few more bucks u can get a dvd with live performance of this album.

cool

Losers, Kings, and things we dont understand always reminded me of my three best friends for some reason... Losers=unpopular kid Kings=popular kid Things we dont understand= Thaine... uh nvm.... This CD is definetly where your going to find LTJ's roots there are a few short dumb songs similar to what u might find on Goodbye Blue and White, seeing as they are both sort of Compilations i guess... this is a bunch of stuff LTJ recorded and wrote before Pezcore, but was released after pezcore, and finally Released again with new cover art and...(if u buy it in a store) A DVD!!!!! they never play this stuff live any more... it makes me sad to go to see them knowing they won't play Time and a half / Econologed!!! But the infamous LTJ have remedied this (no suprise, they are the greatest) It does come with a DVD, personally i have never seen this DVD yet but i do know they have re released thier "Peoples history of Less Than Jake DVD" so you could pick that up and make sure you relive Econologed live! haha. seriously though, it is the ska of thier early carreer and could definetly get you skankin with stuff like, soundcheck, 24 hours in paramus, time and a half (it is misspelled), Econologed, this is going nowhere, down in the mission, and finally the more drunk sounding than on pezcore, shotgun. F****d is funny i guess... laverne and shirly is a remake as well as jenny, st james hotel is pretty good, and lastly, good time for change was originally a hidden track overall a good listen, could get u bored faster than other albums though

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Gainesville, FL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Although formed in 1992 as a power pop trio with heavy punk leanings, Less Than Jake steadily transformed into a ska-inspired punk band with the addition of a horn section. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Demakes, bassist Shaun, and drummer/lyricist Vinnie Fiorello formed the first incarnation of the group, which took root in Gainesville, FL. After Shaun became the group's roadie, however, he was replaced by bassist Roger Manganelli, who picked up the instrument just to join the band. During 1993-1994,...
