Album Review
California native Jeff Scott Soto is a journeyman vocalist who started out singing for theatrical metal guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen in the '80s. He then went on to front numerous not-quite-on-the-radar groups throughout the '90s before teaming with Journey guitarist Neal Schon in the group Soul SirkUS in 2004. Since 1995, Soto has also consistently released solo albums, this being his fourth. The opening song, and Schon co-write, "Believe in Me" sounds like an outtake from Journey's Frontiers (or like psyche-up music from an '80s teen film), while "Soul Divine" has an '80s lite-metal bent to it, as does "Drowning." Soto just happens to have one of those dramatically fierce, vibrato-drenched voices suited toward '80s-style pop-metal, and Lost in the Translation is full of grand gestures befitting that era. Originally released on the European label Frontiers in 2004, the CD was issued stateside by Locomotive Music in 2005.
Customer Reviews
This is Rock at its Finest!
Jeff Scott Soto's "Lost In The Translation" CD is out of this world! Some of his best work yet! If you are a big Rock fan, as I am, you must get this CD. The mixture of over-the-top, high-energy rock tunes coupled with the soulful ballads on this CD displays how Jeff Scott Soto can take it higher with his powerful voice and then tone it down with a voice that makes him sound like he is really feeling what he is singing. If you get a chance, catch him in a live performance, I swear you will not be sorry. He has such tremendous energy and this energy will radiate through the very core that is your soul.
UNBELIEVABLE TALENT
Many of us know Jeff from his 80's metal style. Bottom line though, this guy absolutely dominates every note he sings. I love this album for a bunch of reasons. The first is the song writing. Solid from start to finish. Every tune is a solid layout and showcases Jeff's talents. Best part, he doesn't oversing or steal the spot light. Journey could have done much worse than getting a professional like Jeff. This album shows versitility and why it was probably a no brainer for Neal to get him on tour. If you are still stuck in the 80's, you'll love his vocal runs, if you love the up beat, his Gary Cherone-esque throws will make you rock out. Not only is this worth the money, you will call your friends and start the conversation "you remember that guy that used to sing with Yngwie?"
Perfection!
Jeff Scott Soto and his band display pure perfection on this album. Here, we are treated to some energized rock music that is hard to find these days. Get ready to come out of that bad mood. Not only are the vocals mezmerizing and the lyrics meaningful, but there are really some out of sight guitar riffs being played throughout this album. I bought this album 3 times. 1st copy I accidently left in a car rental in Vegas, 2nd copy was a replacement, and 3rd copy I downloaded from iTunes. If I didn't think this album was awesome, I wouldn't have bought it that many times. So...there you go. By the way, you may have heard Jeff Scott Soto in the movie "Rockstar." He did the vocals for the original frontman of the band "Steel Dragon." The song that comes to mind is "Stand-up." Also, you may recall Neal Schon of Journey putting together another band called "Soul SirkUS." Well, Jeff Scott Soto is the frontman for that group. He also fronted Angwie Malmsteen's band for a while. These aforementioned groups must have seen something in him to want him as their frontman. He does have the vocal pipes to pull it off. Why he is not recognized in the U.S. for all his talent is beyond me. This is a frontman that deserves to be recognized. Buy this album and you will see for yourself.
