iTunes Review

In the “tradition” of Richard and Linda Thompson’s Shoot Out the Lights, the Rosebuds’ Loud Planes Fly Low captures the sound of a marriage falling apart. Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp have divorced but the details are still coming out. However, where the Thompsons were angry and over, these two cherish the friendship and hold on to what they can. There’s a rich subtext underneath these gorgeous electro-indie pop songs. The sound suggests a summer evening, but the lyrics tell us it’s a long night of the soul. The punchy and bright “Come Visit Me” evokes memories of Camera Obscura but Crisp has too much on her mind. “Limitless Arms” builds over five minutes of guitar strumming and rising keyboards with a calming steady beat holding still their rocky waters. “Waiting for You” features a call and response between the two that reminds fans that it wasn’t so long ago when they were singing together about their giddy love. “A Story” adds a darker power. The tones turn ominous and the vocals ache in general anguish. There is hope here — and pain, and truth.

Good Stuff

Circulating through iTunes has been a drain as of late. Nothing has really stood out. In my frustration I clicked on this album as my last one before I was going to quit browsing. Honestly, is it the edgiest, newest sound? No. But the album is fantastic. It has flow from front to back, without being dull. It's melodic and fresh, with the laid-back chill of Saturday morning coffee. It's an easy, enjoyable, front to back listen; a few times over.

Their best album

This is possibly their best album. There's a nice rhythm and melody throughout the album.

Unoriginal

Maybe something will click for me with this band. Until then, this album is boring and unoriginal. The lyrics are so plain and dull.

Indie rock trio the Rosebuds formed in May 2001, the same month that Ivan Howard (vocals/guitars) and Kelly Crisp (keyboards) were married. The two had met while in college in Wilmington, North Carolina, and upon forming the Rosebuds moved to Raleigh in the fall of 2001 and enlisted drummer Billy Alphin (of Ashley Stove). After a split 7", nearby Merge Records discovered their demo in early 2003 and released Make Out, their debut full-length, in October of that year. Following that recording, Alphin...
