Album Review

Signing to a major label, Soundgarden take a step toward the metal mainstream with Louder Than Love, a slow, grinding, detuned mountain of Sabbath/Zeppelin riffs and Chris Cornell wailing. The production is quite murky, as the rest of the band tries to poke its way through Kim Thayil's guitar squall. There are some essential Soundgarden items mixed in, among them the haunting "Hands All Over," the punky "Full on Kevin's Mom," and the stereotypically macho metal stupidity of "Big Dumb Sex," whose ironic intent is often misconstrued. It's certainly worthwhile to sift through Louder Than Love, but don't expect consistency.

Soundgarden-- Louder Than Love

One of the greatest albums released in the 80's! Heavy and Raw start to finish. Original Sub Pop boys. They really helped pave the way for the cross over between metal, punk, and "alternative rock? " Mad props to these guys. iTunes- you need to fix the cover art on this album, the wrong cover downloads on this one! Add Black Sabbath with Ozzy to your iTunes store , what's up with that????

Seattle's Finest! And I Ain't Talkin' Starbucks.

I've been a huge fan of Soundgarden since my late friend Charlie turned me on to them in '89. Badmotorfinger is great and Superunknown rocks too but Louder Than Love Is the absolute best from Soundgarden. Raw, aggressive and pure energy. It's been nearly 20 years since I first heard this on a cassette (remember those?) and I still can't go for more than a week or so without listening to it again. Thanks Charlie! RIP

its about time!

ive been waiting for itunes to release this album since i heard about soundgarden almost 4 years ago. i'm sorry if you don't agree with me but this album expresses sg in their prime. i mean think about it: thayil's riffs are faster heavier and louder than ever, cornell's voice hasn't been destroyed yet, and no offense to ben but they still have yamamoto on bass doing some incredible stuff. i'd recomend any song except maybe "i awake" because to me its really weird and emo and it doesn't sound like the band put a whole lot of time into writing it, but listen to it anyway, you may like it. the top 5 are "ugly truth" "uncovered" "gun" "loud love" and "full on reprise". also i think it was someone named "Lithium" who posted a review saying this was their first album? it wasnt they had "ultramega ok" and "screaming life/fopp" (which i could only find on ebay) both great albums :)

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '10s

Soundgarden made a place for heavy metal in alternative rock. Their fellow Seattle rockers Green River may have spearheaded the grunge sound, but they relied on noise rock in the vein of the Stooges. Similarly, Jane's Addiction were too fascinated with prog rock and performance art to appeal to a wide array of metal fans. Soundgarden, however, developed directly out of the grandiose blues-rock of Led Zeppelin and the sludgy, slow riffs of Black Sabbath. Which isn't to say they were a straight-ahead...
