Album Review
My Favorite's superb debut translates palpable pre-millennial tension into neon-lit synthesizer drama — recalling the heyday of the new wave with none of the irony which sinks like-minded retro-futurists from Romania to the Rentals, Love at Absolute Zero is the soundtrack to a youth rebellion that never was, vividly conjuring a teen underworld as romantic as it is claustrophobic. The album is wonderfully sleek and cinematic — songs like "Absolute Beginners Again" and the remarkable "17 Berlin" unspool like music videos — and although My Favorite bring to mind the chrome-plated aesthetics of the synth pop era with uncanny accuracy, their songs capture a passion and immediacy which the remote robotics of their antecedents lacked. It's quite simply the best album of 1983, delivered 16 years after the fact.

An Alright Encore
When I first heard My Favorite's album Happiest Days of Our Lives, it was hit and miss; but their hits were enough to make me want more, and this album fit the bill just fine. Their emo-indie-pop sound continues in this album, and a lot of the songs stick with you. There are some misses, Party Crashers could've been a good tune had they not repeated the same words over and over throughout all four minutes making it more annoying than catchy. But the hits are fantastic. 17 Berlin, Absolute Zero, Absolute Beginners Again. Even the slow tunes are amazing, The Truth About Lake Ronkonkama echoes something you'd hear in a midnight car ride. Tracks go downhill towards the end, especially the final track You Belong With Us, a song that's slow slow it doesn't know what to do with itself; part of it carries an eerie melody, but then segues into a saxophone that mutilates the song into a slow-sex track... which might be what you want, I don't know.
Just saying
This is their first album, not their encore.
