Album Review

Boys Like Girls' self-titled debut album was an unexpected success, eventually going gold. Devoid of any hit singles, the album seemed to catch on because it was a perfect distillation of the emo-pop sound with no rough edges to scare people away. For the follow-up, 2009's Love Drunk, the band sticks to the same basic template of slick emo-pop with uptempo songs that sound stadium singalong-friendly and ballads that seem destined to melt teenage girls' hearts. The difference this time is that the songwriting is improved and the songs hookier, especially the rockers. "She's Got a Boyfriend Now" and "Contagious" sound like 2000s updates of the classic '80s sound of pop/rockers like Bryan Adams and Rick Springfield.

Hmmm...

Kinda sounds like Somebody Told Me now doesn't it?

this isn't boys like girls.

So we wait three years of excessive touring promoting one album (not to mention touring with avril lavigne) and we get this. We get a pop/techno type song which may be appealing to some of you, way too many for me to understand, when the band I once loved called Boys Like Girls has sold out and made me dislike them over time. I did consider them my favorite band for a while but all they have done is tour, tour tour. Also they have remixed several songs to make music videos for them a few years after they released them. I was excited to hear a new album or even just a new song a year ago, and now finally we get it. Unfortunately what we have gotten is a band that has been sold out for a while now and has lost their touch to the music we loved in their first album. Their lyrics are shallow, boring, and they sound desperate. Desperate for money and desperate to sound exactly like every other alternative band sounds like with a few exceptions. If you really liked Boys Like Girls' debut album, then you should not like this.

Somebody told me...

The Killers called, they want their song back.

Unafraid to wear their heart on their collective sleeve, the Boston-based emo-pop outfit Boys Like Girls features singer/guitarist Martin Johnson, bassist Bryan Donahue, drummer John Keefe, and guitarist Paul DiGiovanni (the last two members being cousins). After Boys Like Girls posted several demo recordings online, the band's lively hooks and youthful enthusiasm had gathered them quite a following by 2005's end, while also catching the attention of industry players like booking agent Matt Galle...
