iTunes Review

1977’s Love Gun captures the band at its zenith, smack in between the two massively successful volumes of Alive!. By this time Kiss was not only a band but a brand name, and Love Gun helped widen its audience by incorporating elements of pop into the band’s signature strain of wild hard rock. Celebrated producer Eddie Kramer gives the band what might be the tightest, strongest sound of its career. “Christine Sixteen,” “Got Love For Sale,” and “Tommorow and Tonight” are essentially power pop songs that can sit comfortably next to Cheap Trick, who were just rising to prominence at the time. That doesn’t mean the album doesn’t also deliver on the things that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley do best. “I Stole Your Love” and “Love Gun” are signature Stanley — sharp swings punctuated by his dramatic wail and Peter Criss’s gunfire snare rolls. “Plaster Caster,” an uproariously lewd tribute to the legendary groupie who collected plaster molds of rock star appendages is one of the all-time great Simmons songs. “Shock Me” is an Ace Frehley original and fan favorite that refers to the guitarist’s near-death electrocution at a concert in late 1976. A closing rendition of the Ronettes’ “Then He Kissed Me” shows that at heart Kiss will always be fans of old-time rock ’n’ roll.

Awesome Album!

This is a great album, in my opinion. Kiss at their best. My personal favorites on Love Gun are probably "Christine Sixteen", "Shock Me", "I Stole Your Love", and the title song, "Love Gun". This was a great time in KISStory, and the album really shows it.

Consider your trigger pulled

I struggle with this record at times. It's the last group effort Kiss ever made and it marked the end of an era and a pinnacle reached. It is very good, but not the ultimate most Kiss fans say it is. I Stole Your Love is the perfect opening track that Paul Stanley has been searching for. Gene takes us somewhere new, and let's face it, kinda sleazy with Christine Sixteen. He's lusting over an underage girl all over a nice wholesome Fats Domino piano riff. And then he talks in the middle with that guidance counselor voice of his. I wonder if this song would be released as a single today? Got Love for Sale is middle of the road, but those pounding drums before the chorus are pretty cool. Shock Me has a nice solo, but let's be honest, it's not as good as some of the material Ace gave away in previous records. Love Gun is the masterpiece here. It's Paul's signature song in so many ways. Great vocals, great rhythm guitar and perfect machine gun drumming. "You see Ronnie, his d--k is the gun!" You'll never accuse him of subtlety, which is ok, we already have Dan Fogelberg for that. Almost Human has it's moments. If you can hang in there for the end of the song, it's got some of Ace's most blistering guitar. My personal favorite song of the set is Plaster Caster. It's pure filth wrapped up in Kiss' brand of power pop. This song fits right in with Go All the Way by the Raspberries with it's "that's what this song is about?" moment. Unfortunately, Paul decided to out doo-wop Gene with Then She Kissed Me. Seriously, dude? And Tomorrow and Tonight is not much better. It's got filler written all over it. I'd rip on Hooligan, but what's the point. You've got ears, you know it's garbage.

Oh the KISS memories

Imagine a world when KISS was still a force to deal with... an album coming out every six months or so? It was a great time to be a KISS fan I'm telling you. This album in particular took a couple of turns on the old turntable to gain any place in my heart for it but, once that shock wore off it was right there with the rest of them. Almost Human sounds so much like something that the Chili Peppers would have done in the 90's I can't believe how ahead of it's time it was. I stole your love was great! Shock me can't be ignored and Christine Sixteen is a staple and an example of the simple times we lived in; I can't imagine someone writing a song like that today.

Formed: 1973 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Rooted in the campy theatrics of Alice Cooper and the sleazy hard rock of glam rockers the New York Dolls, Kiss became a favorite of American teenagers in the '70s. Most kids were infatuated with the look of Kiss, not their music. Decked out in outrageously flamboyant costumes and makeup, the band fashioned a captivating stage show featuring dry ice, smoke bombs, elaborate lighting, blood spitting, and fire breathing that captured the imaginations of thousands of kids. But Kiss' music shouldn't be...
