iTunes Review

These Detroit garage rockers took five years and a line-up shuffle before returning to the game. The infectious single "C'mon, C'mon," from their previous album, 2004's Pawn Shoppe Heart, became the theme for TV's Rescue Me program. The kinetic energy that made that song such a resonating hit can be heard in slightly modified form throughout their 2009 offering, the aptly confrontationally titled Love, Hate and Then There's You. This is garage rock with as many roots in '80s post-punk as '60s psych. "This Is Our Perfect Crime" begins things with that ominous sense of tension that expands to even greater effect for "Pale Bride" where the band's vocals do battle with the spiky guitars that threaten to derail at any moment. Yet, the band's pop sense never lets anything get too out of hand. They like melodies. Whether it's the mock Goth-whine of "Only to Haunt You," the churning swoop of “21st Birthday" or the tattletale 'nah-nahs" of "She's Dead to Me," the band never shies from the catchy chorus.

I've been waiting on this one for awhile; and while there’s nothing here that will approach the phenomenal track C'mon C'mon from their previous release "Pawn Shoppe Heart", it’s a much more even and in my opinion better record. The background vocals accentuate Stollsteimer's own; bringing more depth to the album. All in all I’d certainly say that this is a very good album and would specifically recommend this deluxe version as the bonus tracks also sound great. After a five year hiatus of sorts it’s great to see The Von Bondies back on top of their game. I highly recommend this CD, especially for the value iTunes presents with the five bonus tracks. For those looking to only purchase a few songs, "This Is Our Perfect Crime", "Earthquake", "Pale Bride", "Wake Me Up", and "Only to Haunt You" represent the choice tracks.

Tore Down the Garage and Threw Out Their Soul.

I was extremely disappointed in The Von Bondies' new album. The gritty garage rock they brought us that smelled so sweetly of Detroit is gone, succumbing to the somewhat empty-seeming sound of hipster rock that has become so prevalent these days. I am not saying the music is not good on some level, but why pay for this when The Killers do the same thing, and in a better, more authentic way? The Von Bondies have sold out the soul that made their previous music so raw and powerful, in exchange for some cheap - and fleeting - commercial success with the sounds of the moment.

Better Band, Better CD

This Von Bondies Album is a much better rocker than thier last one 4 years ago. Pale Bride is a great single track, and really catchy, but the whole album has a great sound. Glad they are back! They have two new members and their live perfomance is better than ever.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Detroit, MI

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

The Von Bondies assembled around 2000 in Detroit, MI. Led by guitarist/vocalist Jason Stollsteimer, the group also included guitarist Marcie Bolen, bassist Carrie Smith, and drummer Don Blum. The quartet's fusion of raw blues heartache with ferocious, gritty punk was an overnight sensation in the Motor City, where such influences seemed to float on the surface of the water. They issued a few initial singles ("It Came from Japan," "Nite Train") and word was spreading fast about their fiery live show....
