iTunes Review

Throughout the late '80s and early '90s, Heavy D was one of hip-hop's biggest crossover stars, thanks to numerous hit singles and a decidedly nonconfrontational vibe that was more about partying and girls than illicit sales and drive-bys. 1994's Nuttin' but Love was his most popular release (and the last one with his crew The Boyz), and though he went on to drop two solo records toward the decade’s end, neither really caught fire on the charts. After a nine-year hiatus he returned to the studio for 2008's Vibes, which showcased more of a reggae style. (Heavy was born in Jamaica and always incorporated it into his music to some extent.) Two months before his untimely death in November 2011, he returned with Love Opus, an eight-song album that found him circling back to his romantic rap roots and also sported a lot of straight R&B singing. While not as crucial as some of his older material, it's still great to hear Hev back in the mix, and several of the tracks ("I Can't," "Put It All on Me," and "Hello") are legitimately impressive.

Hip-hop's original overweight lover, Heavy D parlayed an eminently likable persona and strong MC skills into a lengthy career in music, television, and film. Weighing in at over 250 pounds, his girth could easily have become a one-note premise, but he varied his lyrical concerns to include positive message tracks and fun-loving party jams, and exuded warmth and respect for women without getting too graphic or sentimental. Musically, his appeal was just as broad — he was able to mix elements...
