Album Review

It's fair to say that most of Chicago's hit singles were love songs, which makes compiling an album like Rhino's 2005 collection Love Songs a bit of an easy task. There's not much risk that the collection will contain a bunch of little-known album tracks, since there are so many romantic hits in their catalog, and Love Songs proves that theory right, since most of the 18 songs here are among Chicago's best-known songs. This set leans heavily on the group's '80s recordings, both with and without Peter Cetera, but that's not a problem, since it gives the set a coherence. While this isn't a perfect collection — it would have been nice if the original version of "If You Leave Me Now" was here instead of a live version from 2004 featuring Philip Bailey, and it's also strange that Bailey's group, Earth, Wind & Fire, is featured here with "After the Love Has Gone" in a live 2004 recording simply because Chicago's Bill Champlin is on the track — it nevertheless contains nearly all of the band's biggest love songs, including "You're the Inspiration," "Hard to Say I'm Sorry," "Colour My World," "Look Away," "Will You Still Love Me?," "No Tell Lover," "What Kind of Man Would I Be?," and "Wishing You Were Here." That makes this disc an excellent choice for anybody seeking a Chicago album containing nothing but romantic music. Plus, the back cover art of candy hearts bearing Chicago song titles is kinda cute, too.

How could Chicago not be in the Hall of Fame?

These are truly American Classics! They represent the soundtrack to our lives. Over 30 years of writing, playing, and singing some of the best made American Music. I think they have sold over 130 million albums, only the Beach Boys have out sold them, yet the "Music Industry" has never honored them by inducting them inot the R&R hall of fame...I call it the R&R Hall of Shame!

One of the Best Compilations Ever

Chicago produced some of the best love songs in history, with 'Just You N' Me' (Cetera), 'Beginnings' (Lamm), and 'Colour My World' (Kath), but the incredible songwriting of James Pankow, and the incredible horns played in almost every song makes the entire album worth it. 'Call On Me' is drastically underrated as well.

Great Collection

Amazing how many excellent love songs Chicago put out over the years. I'm partial to the earlier ones--half of the songs in Chicago's Greatest Hits Vol 1 are here. Another striking omission, though, is Make Me Smile: I'm so happy that you love me Life is lovely when you're near me Tell me you will stay; make me smile --wonderful lyrics.

Biography

Formed: February 15, 1967 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

According to Billboard chart statistics, Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the most successful American rock band of all time, in terms of both albums and singles. Judged by album sales, as certified by the R.I.A.A., the band does not rank quite so high, but it is still among the Top Ten best-selling U.S. groups ever. If such statements of fact surprise, that's because Chicago has been singularly underrated since the beginning of its long career, both because of its musical ambitions (to...
