Album Review
Recorded after their landmark Girls Can Tell LP but released months before it, Spoon's Loveways EP served as a reintroduction to their core audience as a wiser, more confident combo. Britt Daniel and Jim Eno's unmistakable post-punk energy still anchors the band, but their infatuations with Wire and the Pixies have ceded a bit to allow blues, pop, and even doo wop influences in. While not their most cohesive set, the diverse range of the five songs is the EPs strength — Loveways was the first indication that Spoon was chasing their own sound into exciting and unexpected territories, and in the process coming into their own as a great rock band.

"Yeah, we're still alive"
Contrary to what's listed above, this EP was actually released in late 2000, the first release that Spoon managed to put out after getting dropped from Elektra records. It was recorded after the sessions that would spawn Girls Can Tell, but it was put out as something of a gift card to fans, a way of letting them know that Spoon hadn't fallen off the planet. When it was released, there was no indication as to the path that Spoon was taking. "Jealousy" is Beatles-esque in the extreme, "the Figures of Art" is a happy-time rock rumble that might as well have been penned by Kula Shaker. Before that, however, you have the dreary opener "Change My Life" and the moody, twang-inflected "I Didn't Come Here to Die." Spoon has always put out a varied product, but this EP is probably the most extreme example. Still, this is a great EP to own. Every song is good, though "Chips and Dip" is only okay. It's the sound of a band at a crossroads, pleased with themselves for having survived their "tough break handjob" and yet still lingering in the sadness and uncertainty of that period. If you ever wanted a teaser for all the different sounds that Spoon would produce across this decade, this is the place to start.
Ahhh...more S P O O N.
Essential Track; (That means just download it if you don't know what to get but are just really really excited to see there ARE more Spoon songs out there): "I Didn't Come Here to Die" Essential Track Pt. 2 (If you *really* liked my E.T. #1 and want more): "Jealousy"
changed my life
"Change My Life" is a masterpiece.
