iTunes Review

Loveless is an album that grows in legend with each successive year. The group has never released a follow-up album. But the stories of Kevin Shields’ perfectionism are heartbreaking. Yes, Loveless is a full-out assault on the senses and massive amounts of ink and cyber-ink have been spilled over the album’s intricate greatness. It is a difficult album to initially penetrate. A cursory listen does not yield the insights necessary to understand what is happening here. The first key is arguably “When You Sleep” where the dense wall of sound liquefies just enough to hear the organ and vocals and to catch the wave of deep psychedelia present here. Shields’ and Bilinda Butcher’s vocals melt together as the swerving intensity of “I Only Said” careens like a racecar around curves sharper than anticipated while “Come In Alone” is blacklight love at its most alluring. This was an album that took two intense years and $500,000 to finish, money the label did not recoup and that it could not afford. There are no easy answers, but headphones, a lava lamp and a dark room help bring the blueprints of this legendary album into focus.

Customer Reviews

An album so epic, it needs to be reviewed twice!

And that's what I would do here, except you can't really review art. So I'm just gonna say: Get this album, it'll change your life.

Like an old friend...

I purchased this album while a sophomore in high school. I still remember my utter bemusement after listening to this album for the first time in its entirety. I didn't quite know what to make of it. It was unlike anything that I had ever heard before (Pardon the cliche). It was like this thick languid wave of sound with a strange disarming tenderness at its heart. There was something about it that I just couldn't get enough of. This is one of those classic albums that you don't outgrow.

20 Years-Still influencing the next generation.

It's sort of like what they said about The Velvet Underground - Not many people were in to the Velvet Underground, but those that were ended up forming great bands. Same goes with MBV
I reviewed The Dirty Masons the other day, and I'm not kidding, I heard the second track and thought, "Oh, the MBV guitar lives."
It's been twenty years and Loveless still kills you. The funny thing is, ITunes has not received enough rating to display an average rating for this album.
If they ever toured again I would be there and I'm sure many more just to see the display of noise make pretty melodies.

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and the Jesus & Mary Chain before them, My Bloody Valentine redefined what noise meant within the context of pop songwriting. Led by guitarist Kevin Shields, the group released several EPs in the mid-'80s before recording the era-defining Isn't Anything in 1988, a record that merged lilting, ethereal melodies of the Cocteau Twins with crushingly loud, shimmering distortion. Though My Bloody Valentine rejected rock & roll conventions, they didn't subscribe...
