iTunes Review

Austin cult favorite Bob Schneider sings well and writes catchy tunes, but it’s his whimsical lyrics that are his calling card. Schneider is adept at tossing off teasing volleys of imagery (as in “Realness of Space” and “Til Someone Catches a Feelin’”) that jumble up fragments of ordinary life with odd poetic nuggets. At times, especially on “Your Head Holds Gold, Your Heart Holds Diamonds,” he recalls the jazzy argot of Mose Allison or Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. What gives Schneider his appeal is his warm heart — even when he’s being fanciful, the romantic undercurrent in “Everybody’s Doin’ It,” “40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)” and similar tracks is easy to catch. Musically, he shows a weakness for steamy Latin numbers (“Tarantula,” “Bombonanza”) and footloose folk-pop (“Trash,” “Bicycle vs. Car”). He also offers up some insinuating retro-soul (“The Bringdown”) and an aching lost-love ballad (“Changing My Mind,” sung with Patty Griffin). His playful personality brings an overall unity to the musical menagerie found on Lovely Creatures.

Great CD, but many of the songs are previously available

First, and foremost, this is another excellent cd by Bob. As a former Austinite, I've been a fan for years. While it is always nice to get new takes on previously released material, for those of you who have heard the single releases and official "bootlegs" from various concerts, all but 5 of these songs are probably in your collection already in one version or another. With that said, the studio release of "Changing My Mind", "The Bringdown", "Slower Dear", "Everybody's Doin' It", "Bombananza", "Your Head Holds Gold", and "Tarantula" (finely a studio version!) are all excellent and worth the double-dip. The new tracks, especially "40 Dogs" and "Til Someone Catches a Feelin'" are worth the price of the album alone. Keep up the great work Bob!

Hooked in a day

I own all albums by my main man Bob Schneider. This one might be considered as good at Lonelyland. Changing my mind, Everybody's doing it, and Ghost are my frontrunners for favorites on this album. 40 Dogs is a radio friendly hit for sure. Just perfect...

FAYM

Love Bob! I have seen him MANY times live! Unfortunately, this is another vanilla studio recording. The essence of Bob is lost in the over production of the studio. An interesting record would include songs like Walking Dead I am, A Good Thing, Game Plan, etc. done in the studio but without the producer that is sucking the life out of the music. I'll stick to FRUNK for now.
