Album Review

The Sound of Animals Fighting isn't so much a band as it is Equal Vision Records' version of 4AD's old in-house studio party This Mortal Coil: the band — who appear in creepy-cute animal masks in all of their photos and use pseudonyms derived from same — has no fixed lineup, but includes members of RX Bandits, Circa Survive, Chiodos, Days Away, and the Autumns. Freed from expectations of their own bands, the group creates an utterly bizarre but often engrossing blend of experimental noise and heavy stoner metal. Imagine if Sun City Girls and Meat Puppets had collaborated circa 1986 and the combination of twangy guitar riffs, heavily processed vocals, and arrhythmic bangs and squeaks of the eight-minute centerpiece "Stockhausen, Es Ist Ihr Gehrin, Das Ich Suche" will start to make a bit more sense. Supposedly recorded with each member of the band playing in complete isolation under the direction of producer and mastermind Rich Balling, unable to hear what was on the other tracks, the album has the fractured and occasionally tedious feel of a spontaneous "happening," but at times, everything comes together into actual songs like the haunting "Skullflower," a genuinely pretty song that's only strengthened by the random noise bursts that flit across it.

as soon as i heard them i thought it was like music coming right out of like jesuses mouth
it is the most artistic and beautiful thing ive ever heard
and i didnt think anyone could feel differently
then i let my friend who i thought had the same musical taste as me hear it
she said
"whats so interesting about it, its soo boring"
i wanted to slap and shake her and yell whats wrong with you at the same time
yet all i could do is stare with my mouth open
Is this music not some of the most beautiful and creative thing youve ever heard?

"Lover the lord has left us..." is yet another masterpiece by TSAOF on their journey through the creation of sound. The only thing i would say is a downer on this album is the inclusion of the last track, "there can be no dispute that monsters live among us". This is an unnecessary and overly obvious statement to what the purpose of TSAOF's musical creations are, and is terribly carried out as well. However, the rest of the album is so incredible, and the genius of TSAOF makes up for this horrible ending.

For the purposes of mystique (and, one assumes, legal reasons due to the various participants own recording contracts), the experimental noise rock collective the Sound of Animals Fighting appear in public only in cheap creepy cute children's Halloween masks with cartoon animals on them.
