Slim-Love's Crazy
As a member of the popular 90’s quartet, 112, Slim who has appeared on various rap artists albums, Three 6 Mafia and Young Gunz most notably, he is finally here with his debut release, Love’s Crazy. She Got That: Midnight Black start things off with some club heavy production and bass clap rhythms. Slim intertwines his light tender vocals through the club rowdiness, its definitely an attempt to draw mainstream appeal, however Slim doesn’t sound as comfortable as he should. Nonetheless a decent club cut. 3/5 Good Lovin’: Ryan Leslie creates a bouncy synth string accompaniment, as Slim croons over the track. Leslie assists on the hook, but the track is simply mediocre and even a decent Fabolous guest appearance can’t save the track. 3/5 So Fly: The lead single, Oddz N Endz deliver grooving bass, while the track glides into a chilled and relaxed mood. Slim sounds at home on this track, delivering his soft vocals with the fitting thump, yet smooth production. Joc fits the mood and only adds to the track. 4/5 So Gone: More of a midtempo, Slim sings with a bouncy rhythm that has a flirtatious effect. The hook is well done, but the verses are only decent, however the contrast of Faith Evans appearance works nicely. 3.5/5 Sweet Baby: Guitar melody with light claps in the background set the tone for a smooth and sweet track. The problem is the track turns a bit dull, as well as sappy and the autotune doesn’t help matters. 2.5/5 Heels On: The track has light keyboards, while Slim croons some dirty lyrics on the hook of makin love with the heels on. Yung Berg does his typical verse of being with a girl, reminiscent of his own hit “The Business” while unknown rapper, Deezo drops a decent verse. 2.5/5 Bedtime Stories: Slim heads toward bedroom ballads, as the production by Designated Hittaz & EP create the perfect backdrop. Slim uses his smooth croon and utilizes his falsetto to make a sexual bedroom number. 3/5 U Got Me (Addicted): Decent production, but it isn’t enough to carry the track. Slim’s hook sadly isn’t polished enough and gets monotonous. However, he does show some vocal ability and emotion that is a plus. 3/5 Don’t Say It: Decent track, but the production is lacking. Slim sings okay, but the mundane production in the background makes this track too dull. It’s essentially bass and claps. 2/5 Leave U Alone: Slim joins in on the trend of autotune vocals for a bit on this uptempo number that is well produced by Mario Winans & EP. Twinkling piano keys, fitting bassline’s and the building of production combines for an excellent track. All would be good, if it wasn’t for the autotune use. 3.5/5 Apologize: Fitting production by Kuya makes for a sincere and believable track. Slim’s breezy hook and soft vocals shine here, as he pleads to his lady to forgive him for his mistakes. He uses some corny lines, but it overall sounds good. 4/5 Love’s Crazy: Slim finishes things with an uptempo Organized Noize production, as Outkast’s Big Boi drops a guest feature and his flow is on point. Solid finisher that works due to the sparkly production. 3.5/5 Anything: An uptempo cut that has a dancefloor mood, the track is a decent club track. 3/5 Girl Like You: Smooth that has some sweet singing and a great melody. Solid bonus right here. 3.5/5 Slim’s debut is filled with decent midtempos and uptempos. He rarely goes to slow paced ballads, which tend to work better for him. “So Fly” is a welcomed summer jam with Yung Joc that fits Slim’s tender croon, while “So Gone” is a nice duet with Faith Evans. “U Got Me (Addicted)” is a decent midtempo, along with the glittery “Love’s Crazy” and sexual bedroom number “Bedtime Stories”. Its the soft and sincere ballad, “Apologize” that will likely get listeners attached, as Slim creates a believable case of apology, it is one of the album’s highlights. While there are these moments of good, there are some tracks that fall a bit short. While “She Got That” has a bangin club production, it doesn’t suite Slim’s soft croon as well and ends up being too far of a reach for mainstream. “Sweet Baby” is likeable and smooth, but does get dull and tends to be a bit too sappy. “Don’t Say It” falls flat and goes to boredom because of the weak production that leaves Slim out to dry and he doesn’t have the voice to captivate you without a beat. Slim’s debut is a worthy disc, that should appeal to 112 fans and others he’s picked up along the way. However, I think he sounds better with his group, but he does hold his own, just doesn’t have the impactful voice to be destined for R&B stardom. Rating: 7 out of 10
