Album Review

The second installment of Appleseed Cast's Low Level Owl project is just as highly experimental — and surprisingly successful — as its companion. Like volume one, it is sequenced like one long track, its individual pieces woven together with samples, found sounds, and tape effects. Volume two contains more instrumental material than its predecessor, which adds to its symphonic qualities; at these moments, the band is reminiscent of Mogwai, building layers of billowing guitars and repetitive motifs to create a hypnotic effect. Other times, there's a druggy drone rock quality to volume two that recalls Spiritualized or My Bloody Valentine. Overall, the Low Level Owl project is ambitious, sprawling, and maybe long-winded, but is loaded with enough beautiful moments and adventurous recording ideas to make it remarkable.

Opened the Door to A Whole Genre

For those who shiver at the word "Emo", this album was my gateway into the world of Post Rock. Instrumentally has the same feeling (not sound, but feeling) of bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, but the vocal layers set TAC in a whole new category. By far, the most influential album for me personally as a musician; the Appleseed Cast hit a high point here, especially with Vol 2, tracks 1 and 2. Amazing album, wonderful transitions, and fantastic use of delay and chorus effects.

And The Critics Say...

"Low Level Owl is a supernova and a full redefinition of The Appleseed Cast...a sprawling two-disc monster that redirects their ambition from the emotional release of their earlier albums into the meticulous conceptions crafted through endless hours of studio time. Overhauling their sound and incorporating a wide melange of styles, the technical execution throughout the album is flawless. Just the arrangement of the music alone shows the amount of thought that goes into an album of this size. There are hints of Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine and Built to Spill - all embedded a lush wave of production reminiscent of the Flaming Lips, Spiritualized or Mogwai. With Low Level Owl, they establish their own unique vision for the future of rock, offering hope and brighter possibilities for the genre...or rather, creating their own. It's time to herald The Appleseed Cast for what they are now, and what they're about to become: ground breaking." - Pitchfork "Low Level Owl: Volume II from The Appleseed Cast has me floored. This is one of the most engaging emo albums I have ever heard. With interesting interludes between tracks and the more straightforward songs making use of open arrangements and unorthodox studio techniques of the instrumental/ambient songs, the ebb and flow of this album is so natural and beautiful that I hardly know how to describe it. It's like a great movie, and I feel as though I've gone on a long, interesting and beautiful journey. Low Level Owl, whether you're talking about Volume I, Volume II, or the project in its entirety, is easily the emo album of the year. No other band matches the ambition in scope and expertise of execution of the Appleseed Cast. Low Level Owl will likely one day be a revered part of the emo/indie rock canon, so check this out now." - Deep Fry Bonanza "Starting off as the first volume finishes, Volume II of Low Level Owl is meant to be listened to immediately after the first disc ends, as The Appleseed Cast's latest offering is clearly one work - one immense, lofty and absolutely amazing work. Taking progressive rock in a new direction, The Appleseed Cast will go down as innovators after these releases. The songs are incredibly textured and perfectly produced, and the band experiments with a number of techniques from loops and new drumming styles to intricate instrumentals and ethereal soundscapes. Often, the band breaks off into instrumental periods where they try some of their more experimental approaches, which are thrilling, with tremendous beauty and passion. Complex and beautiful, The Appleseed Cast shows they are on the verge of, if not already achieving, greatness." - Delusions of Adequacy "The second installment of Appleseed Cast's new project, Low Level Owl, is just as highly experimental - and successful - as its companion. Like Volume I, it is sequenced like one long track, its individual pieces woven together with samples, found sounds and tape effects. Volume II contains more instrumental material than its predecessor, which adds to its symphonic qualities; at these moments, the band are reminiscent of Mogwai, building layers of billowing guitars and repetitive motifs to create a hypnotic effect. Other times, there's a druggy drone rock quality that recalls Spiritualized or My Bloody Valentine. Overall, Low Level Owl is ambitious, sprawling and loaded with enough beautiful moments and adventurous recording ideas to make it remarkable." - All Music "On Low Level Owl: Volume II from The Appleseed Cast, songs gradually transform from subtly melodic indi-pop numbers to zero-gravity space odysseys, with zooming guitars and whooshing wind tunnel effects. Blending The Cure's penchant for lush intros with vibrant percussion that keeps the tunes from drifting into an ethereal fantasy realm, The Appleseed Cast composes songs that seem to function in dream time, making listeners feel as if they've been transported on a significant, substantial voyage. Low Level Owl mirrors the complexity and ambition of The Flaming Lips, reinforcing the album's otherworldly atmosphere." - Pitch Weekly "The second volume of Low Level Owl from The Appleseed Cast continues with the atmosphere established in the first...soothing vocals and lush instrumentation that builds upon itself and relies on reverb and other audio manipulations to achieve its hypnotic feel. In one word, amazing." - Impact Press
