Berio at his best.
OK, it's safe to assume that Luciano Berio was great as a composer in his own right. He made the classical music of his period not only react to external stimuli (like postmodernism), but even made it popular! But Berio was extraordinary as a transcriptionist. He often did it to his own works (several of his "Chemins" pieces are transcriptions of earlier "Chemins" versions). And of course, there is "Sinfonia", which is not so much a collage of music, but a vast, interconnected web of meanings based on one single idea (the sea, water, rebirth). This album is all about transcription –– handled beautifully by Riccardo Chailly. Berio's love of previous forms of music are apparent here (Purcell's whimsical poke at his uncle, the lovely Brahms clarinet concerto in all of its woodbine loveliness), but he really excels at reinterpreting music of the past and turning assumptions of it on its head (the playful Mozart piece stripped down to its faced paced rhythmic underpinnings). Rendering sounds like a faced paced drive through a 19th century landscape painting, creatures of the night and all, Berio creatively filling in the spots left unfinished by Mendelssohn's 10th symphony with eerie flashes of sound and tonal color that leaves the listener wanting more. My favorite is the "Quattro versioni originali dalla 'Ritirata Notturna di Madrid'". This piece is a Spanish-themed four layer cake of sound, four similar versions of the same piece by Boccherini, layered one on top of the other. It's a double minimalist piece (for its simplicity and layering) AND a sound mass piece, designed to give one the impression of a warm night in the Spanish capital as one stands out on a balcony and watches a barrack band pass by noisily in the street below. It's a real showstopper.
By all means, get this album. You'll be glad you did!
